the owner'x manual say...

Post by snoopy »

Since I have my fantom-x, I save all files (svq, svd, sample, etc...) for each band or Project.

I connect the fantom-x to the PC and I copy the ROLAND folder to my PC.

for example, when I want to work on the project x,y or z, I replace the current ROLAND folder of the fantom-x by the file x,y or z from my pc and I restart the fantom-x.

that run very well

but...
i
n the owner'x manual,they say:
"Don't use your computer to move or delete folders within the Fantom-x"
"Don't use use your computer to delete or overwrite the files located in the ROLAND/SND/folder"

how do I have to make to quickly change svd, svq, sample files?

my solution is very fast and useful because I have need others svd,svq,sample... for each projects but the owner's manual disadvise this.

for what is used the usb storage then if i can't move or replace some files?

I would like to know too:
in the snd folder, there is a fans.svd file and there is a fans.svs file.
what is the fans.svs file?

thank you very much

The FANS.SVD file in the User Memory contains all user data - patches, performances, rhythm kits, arpeggios, rhythms, chords, multisamples and system setup. The FANS.SVD on SM card is used for everything except arps, rhythms, chords and setup.

Why shouldn't you delete any folders? Becuase your fantom relies upon a certain directory structure, and if you delete some directory and then try to save your song or sample, it will say "card unformatted".

Why shouldn't you replace the fanbs.svd file? Because whenn you try to write a patch or performance to card, it will fail.

So, if you are not aware of saving anything to the card, you can freely swap the 'roland' folder as many times as you want. I myself, to be sure that fans.svd file is untouched (just in case), back up and then swap only SEQ and SMPL folders - these are those that contain song files and samples.

You are not doing anything dangerous.

Artemio gave his contribution.
Now I'll try to give mine.

Maybe the "FANS.SVS" is where sample informations are stored, such as loop points, notes, names and multisample information.

I'm suspecting this because, according to Chicken Systems, all sample informations on XV-5080 are stored in a file called Smpl.SVP. (Or things like this).

If my information is correct, FX sampler has taken a good way.

Hope this could be clarifyed by a Fantom-X-pert user.

Edu, he just made a mistype. There is no FANS.SVS file - there is one FANS.SVD file. It contains: patches, performances, rhythm kits, arpeggios, rhythms, chords, multisamples and system setup.

Loops points, original keys and other data is stored within each wav/aiff sample file.

Thank you for yours answers.

sure Arténio,
with the fantom-x,
we have two files in the snd folder.
there is a fans.svd file and there is a fans.svs file.

in fact,i use my fx as a multitracks recorder and for exemple,
for the project A, i use somes samples(1,2,3...).

When I begin a project, my list of samples is empty and starts in top of the liste.(sample 1,2,3...) it is thus for all my projects. I proceed thus because my samples take enormously place and I don't want to use the same list of samples for all my projects.(not enough of place on my compactflash or fantom-x mémory)

(and i dont want to by a big capacity compact flash.
too much expensive for the moment)

until now, I do not have any problems with my method.
I would like to know then why the manual prohibit this.

i don't have the french manual for the moment and maybe it's me who don't understands correctly.

Artenio,you say:"
So, if you are not aware of saving anything to the card, you can freely swap the 'roland' folder as many times as you want. I myself, to be sure that fans.svd file is untouched (just in case), back up and then swap only SEQ and SMPL folders - these are those that contain song files and samples."

and when the handbook say what i say on the top on this page,

it is not this what the handbook precisely prohibits?

or then they want simply to say that it is necessary to keep the same sites of folders ans files inside the Roland folder.

take a look at my tutorial about the Fantom-S/X memory structure and file management.
http://fantom.wilkesworld.co.uk/memory.htm

I didn't know there was a fans.svs file - but I don't have a Fantom-X.
As the fans.svd file appears to be compatible between the Fantom-S and X, perhaps the svs file contains data that is specific to the X - like the additional pad and live performance settings. I don't know for sure till I see one.

Regarding moving samples around the key thing as it explains in my tutorial is to make sure the samples are always in the same slot - i.e. the same sample number.
For example, your patch will be looking for a file SMPL0027, not "big brass" or whatever you named the sample.

I don't see any reason why you cannot just copy over an entire new SND directory, it is just Roland erring on the side of caution and protecting themselves against users screwing things up by copying the wrong stuff to the wrong place
