B-3 "Leslie" Control tip

Post by Red Winger »

While this may have been obvious to others, it didn't immediately occur to me, so I thought I'd pass it along just in case it will help anyone else. I'd been struggling a bit with controlling the rotary effects on the B-3 patches, just because I like to use two hands on the keys from time to time while I'm braking or speeding up the rotation effect...something that's a bit hard to do with the modulation lever, since you have to hold it on or off. What I discovered, though, is that you can set the four control knobs to "assignable" and then use the first (left-most) control knob (I forget the name right now) to increase the speed of the rotation, and then just momentarily hit the modulation lever to do the "slow-down/brake" effect. While not perfect (you still have to lift a hand off the keys), it doesn't require you to keep your left hand off to hold the modulation lever, the tweaks to the knob or lever you apply can be very quick, and you get the nice speed-up/slow-down and brake effects. Thus, I can quickly lift my left hand, change the speed, and get back to the keys without missing much in the way of playing. One caveat: this doesn't work that well with some of the patches of the SRX-07, which are better off using the modulation lever.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass this tip on. If anyone has come up with a better solution, please post it, as I'm always looking to improve technique.

Cheers,

I've always used aftertouch to speed up the leslie effect with good results. I'm finding though that I have to press really hard on the S88 to engage aftertouch, and was thinking about trying something different. I'll try your tip, and I'll report if I find any other ideas.

Thanks,

Hmmm...I wonder if adjusting the aftertouch sensitivity would help there. Haven't tried to do that yet, but I believe there's a way to alter the sensitivity. I agree with you that the preset sensitivity is pretty hard (good for pitch bends on leads, but I don't think it would be that great for rotary effect).

Thanks for the idea!

I actually called Roland tech support after I set the sensitivity to maximum. Roland told me that activating the aftertouch on this keyboard (PA5) requires more pressure than on the PA4 - which happen to be in my XV88 - which works alot better for aftertouch. This is the first keyboard I've have this problem with. I'm going to give it a bit more time and see if I can get used to it. I've grown used to using this technique for quite a while. Alot of the songs I play require playing two simultaneous parts and I would basically have to go without this effect if I didn't use aftertouch. But, going without changing leslie speed effects while playing organ would drive me insane.

Leslie control tip

Post by Erdem »

Hi from Turkey;

First of all I would like to thank "artemio" for this great site.

The solution to your problem is EV-5 expression pedal which I use for my XP-80. I assigned it to modulation control in the XP and I am using to control "Leslie" effect in Organ patches. (Fast, Slow)

I don't know about the s88 operating system but if it allows you to assign expression pedal you can control "Leslie" effect using EV-5 with your foot without taking your hands off the keyboard.

Hope you find this tip useful.

Erdem,

Thanks for the tip. S88 will allow you to assign the control pedal to mod, and I've thought about doing this, but my EV-5 is on order right now (my local store was out of stock). Glad to hear that you've used it with success.

Erdam,

Thanks for the tip and welcome. I actually used to use an expression pedal before I switched to aftertouch. I found it a little difficult to use at gigs that I'm standing up.

I think I'll dig it our and give it a another try - thanks for the idea - I forgot all about it.

So can you assign the leslie control to one part of a layer in performance mode? I've been trying with no success. Anybody done this?

with the fantom-s/x some of new functions are here with the sacrifice of other functions compared to the fantom F-76.

with F-76. I controled the lesly with the realtime control switche.
with the fs/x we cannot any more.

there are a lot of example like that.

whit the fs/x i control the lesly with the control pédal or realtime control knob.
