Windows 7 Driver Installation HELP!!!

Post by Alice Sweet Alice »

I was told to start a new thread on this. I have a Fantom XR, and have just upgraded to Windows 7. I now need to get my Fantom driver going. Another thread here gave the following instructions, but for a NOOB like me, some things need clarification. The instructions are numbered, and my questions will be prefaced by "NOTE". BTW, I am using Windows 7 Home 64 bit.

If you download the drivers for the Fantom XR and try to install them in Windows 7 RC, you will be told that the operating system is not supported. Here's how to install the drivers:

1. Download the latest driver, which is a zip file.

NOTE: Which Drivers? Vista 64 in my case? There is none for Win 7 yet I presume.

2. Unzip the files.

NOTE: Where to?

3. [the first trick] Copy the files to another folder, making them visible/unzipped.

NOTE: this doesn't make sense to me. Don't you always move all the files from a zipped file to a folder? Is this what the OP is telling me to do? And if so, where would be the best place to create the folder and unzip the files into?

4. [the second trick] Use Device Manager, NOT Devices & Printers. Devices & Printers will load a troubleshooter that takes forever to get you nowhere. Instead, use the old Device Manager. Do this by Control Panel, Hardware, Device manager link

5. Turn on the Fantom XR. It will appear as Other Devices in the Device Manager.

NOTE: This procedure from 4-5 works PERFECTLY!

6. Right-click on Fantom XR and select Update Driver.

7. Browse to where you put your driver files.

NOTE: I did this and I got a dialog box saying basically "can't find drivers"

I should say here that in doing this, I downloaded two seperate ZIP files, the Vista 64 and the general "FantomXusbdrivers"

I unzipped them to a folder on my desktop, and this is where I tried to browse to from the Device Manager, getting the aforementioned error message, after selecting one folder after another on two consecutive tries.

HELP?
Thanks!!

I would recommend you to wait for official driver for Windows 7. You are risking to break something in your system that will even prevent the G from working even when you re-install the official driver.

Right,
Any clue as to when that's going to happen?

Until then, or until I get another work around via this forum, we're going to use our XP machine to make our edits, which is inconvenient because it's in the kids room and not in our studio, but until Roland gets on it I'm afraid that's our only choice.

Thanks
