Compact Flash CONUNDRUM

Post by Alice Sweet Alice »

Hello everyone. New here! We have just acquired a Fantom XR and are attemting to load our samples.

During setup, we were able to read from a compact flash and see a FEW of the samples we had put on it. We didn't have any memory installed, as we wanted to save them in USER memory. So I installed a 256 chip.

When we powered back up, the flash card reads blank, both from the X itself AND from the EDITOR program. I took it back downstairs to our computer and it has the same content it did before. So I reformatted it, loaded the content back (into a file called "AUDIO_IMPORT") The card performed perfectly. But the Fantom X and the Fantom X editor say otherwise.

Thoroughly frustrated now, we thought we'd be smart and try to by pass and load through the USB, but it's asking for a .SVD file. Is there any way to convert WAV (stereo 16 bit) to an SVD? I have the Fantom X sample converter and I may be able to import our samples that way.

So this is a 2 part question I guess! LOL.

First is, why the heck won't the Fantom read the card now, and 2, is there a way to convert my wavs to SVD so I can load them directly from the computer to the Fantom - and KEEP them there?

Your help is appreciated!

PS, other things we've tried since. Factory Reset, as we just got the thing and loaded new DIMM. But still nothing. Also, the memory IS installed correctly; we checked. X says we have 98% avail.

Okay, it's a bit hard to understand what you're doing, but here is what you need:

1. You must have the DIMM memory expansion to load more than 16 MB of samples.
2. You must have a flash card to save more than 16 MB of samples.

Once you have both of these in your XR:

1. Put the samples in /TMP/AUDIO_IMPORT
2. Go through the "Import Audio" procedure
3. Make sure to mark all samples in the sample list and WRITE them to the flash memory
4. Now you can delete the originals from /TMP/AUDIO_IMPORT

OK! This is what I'm not getting (and thank you very much for your reply to start with !)

WHERE, do I make the /TMP/AUDIO_IMPORT file?

I can't do it on the COMPACT Flash, as Windows does not allow "/" in the naming of folders.

Also, I used a regular DIMM memory card (256MB) from an old computer, and the Fantom liked it just fine; at least it registers when I do a memory check as having 98% free. And my compact flash card is 1GB capacity, the MAX the Fantom will allow.

______________________

The problems began when we tried to do the IMPORT AUDIO procedure and were unable to do so due to lack of memory, that's what prompted my installation of the DIMM.

______

I guess the biggest frustration is that when we started this procedure, PRIOR to me installing the memory stick, we were able to SEE the compact flash and SOME of the samples. After I installed the stick, it appears as though something happened and we are no longer able to read the card from the FANTOM and from the FANTOM-X EDITOR.

WE REALLY appreciate your help!!!!

You need to make a folder named TMP and inside that folder, make another one named AUDIO_IMPORT, and put your samples in there. Although the XR may allow you to browse to any other folder from the audio import screen, but this is standard location it looks in.

Oh yes, and when you say "we were able to see", do you mean you connect the XR via USB storage mode to your computer? If so, make sure you're selecting the CARD area, not the USER area.

Make sure you format the card from the Fantom rather than from the PC. That can make a difference, and it will create all the folders you need on the card :o)

Wow! You are so helpful!

So Andy, I will read the manual in a second, but we didn't know we could format the card from the Fantom. I will do a search to see if I can find out how first, unless you have any quick words of wisdom!

And thank you for the explanation about the Folder naming!

and: Oh yes, and when you say "we were able to see"

Exactly, we connected the Fantom via USB and opened the Fantom-X Editor, and went to the SAMPLES and then CARD. Prior to my installation of the DIMM, we went here and were able to see "SOME" of the samples. There are 16 and 5 of them showed up. Strange. This is prior to us putting them in ANY folder.

BUT, biggest issue right now is enabling the FANTOM to SEE the Compact Flash. Formatting is my next step. I'm hitting the books, but I will eagerly await your reply in any case.

YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED, Andy!!

I have an X, not an XR, so don't know the procedure, I'm afraid, but it'll be in the manual. Look up "Card Format".

Once you've formatted it on the Fantom, plug the card into your PC. You should then be able to find the /TMP/AUDIO_IMPORT folder to copy your samples into.

Hope this helps.

Andy!!

MAN you are a GODSEND!

I was able to format the card and the Fantom sees it now. I'm playing with the sounds now. If it wasn't for you, we'd be stuck. Formatting solved the problem.

Thank you SOOO much!

We love our Fantom!!!!

Hope to "see" you around! And as a gesture of thanks, please visit our website: www.alicesweetalice.org

If you become a member, you can download both of our albums for free (if you like the music that's playing.)

Andy,
Nice tunes! You should check out SOMOJO.net. They're based there in the UK. Phil, the owner, is an ace guy. You'll see us over there from time to time.

Cheers!
