Sample in mono?

When plugging in a cd player or other external device to sample..is it best to sample in mono or stereo? I heard mono works fine and takes less space but i'm not sure..

If the sound you're sampling doesn't have a notable stereo field, then mono will be okay. Otherwise, sample in stereo to preserve the original stereo field.
