Hi Folks
I recently bought 1GB RAM on ebay that the seller guarantees to work with the Fantom -X. I followed the instructions & every time I tried to fit it (and I tried a few times) I got the error message 'DIMM ERROR - POWER OFF & CHECK DIMM'
The RAM was properly seated & I did try this a few times (8-10) then I stopped just in case I was doing any damage to the phantom. I re-fitted my 512mb & it worked perfectly.
I have contacted the seller & he says he will exchange the RAM if I return it to him. I am in Australia, so I don't want to get another one that doesn't work - I'd rather get my cash back. It cost $125 US & I don't want to waste more money on postage sending it back etc.
Anyway, Is there any special trick to fitting the RAM or is it a standard plug & play type operation. If anyone has any tips or advice I'd be eternally grateful - keep up the good work all you experts - I'd be lost without this forum
many thanks
Philpott

Hi Philpott,
Sounds like you just got a bad stick. I am using a 1 GB stick(Kingston) from ebay with no problems, and as far as I remember it was a very straight forward install. The seller, if it is the same one, does sell memory that work well with the Fantom, you probably just got a bad stick. I would return it.
The only thing you have to expect is that, with the 1 GB stick, your rendering, startup, and sample loading times will increase, even if you have a clean RAM stick. The keyboard does tend to respond slower when dealing with samples with a 1 GB stick. I think this is why Roland doesn't endorse it, but it does work. If you really need the bigger size and don't mind the slower response, go for it. If you don't, you are probably better off with the 512.

BTW, I have 2000 samples, and a 6+ min song loaded right now and still have 79% free on a 1 GB stick.
