Portishead is a really dope group (are they still together?). It is possible to make "organic" music in the X (if that's what Portishead makes?). Any synth sound can be created and the scratching of the turntables can be sampled in and recorded on a audio track. You could even record vocals into the Fantom but to create Portishead's vocal sound you need extensive effects that may push the X to its limits? If you get it done, let me hear it I am a big fan. I thought it was called "Trip Hop" but whatever you call it it's dope music.

Yup, Portishead is still around. They released "3" last year. A bit more experimental than their earlier trip hop sound, but still dirty sounding, if nothing else. I'm a huge fan of theirs as well.
I wasn't really referring to the vocals or dj scratching in their earlier work, it was more the type of sound they got from their instruments. This is why I also referred to Martin Medeski & Wood, a instrumental jazz/funk band.
I find the stock sounds are quite clean, which are fine for most applications. I'm just having a hard time getting it sound not so pristine, more grainy and harsh. I'm sure it's in the effects, like some distortion, compression etc, if I'm going to get what I'm looking for. Just wondering if anybody here got some tracks in that vein.

A lot of the drums on '3' are him playing a real kit. You could probably dirty things up by using the 'lo-fi compression' effect, or some compression and distortion.
This article in Sound on Sound might help - Adrian Utley explaining how he produced the album... http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov08/a ... ishead.htm
I managed to get a fairly good imitation of that lovely synth sound on Track 4 of Third by using one of the patches in SRX-98.
