Playing along with songs

Post by Moray »

This sounds kind of stupid and basic, but what methods do members use for playing along live with sequenced songs?

I presume that if you have a song that uses, say 6 tracks for piano, bass, drums, guitar, strings and synth pad and you want to add a brass patch in live play, then you record your song as per usual on, say, tracks 1-5 and 10, and then allocate track 6 to the brass patch, then make sure it is selected in the mixer when playing live?

If you want to change patches, you need to make sure that the sounds you are using are allocated to adjoining tracks so you can cursor key along between them?

Other than using sysex, is this the easiet way?

Easiest way to change patches, without sysex, is using RPS.

- Set your tempo to 5 bpm
- Select the sound you need
- Go to pattern menu
- Press record, notice that metronome will start to click very slow
- Take you time and change the patch. Try change it directly (I recommend to program favorites first)
- press stop, do some micro control etc etc till you have only your patch change left
- assign the created pattern to one of the lower keys using RPS.

Now, every time you press this key, you will recall this particular patch.
Make more "change patterns" indeed needed.

Also, if you are playing along with a sequence, you can program you patch changes directly into the sequence so it changes automatically where you need it. Of course this method only works when the song is static.

Hmm... it's only the easiest way given the Fantom's design.

On the Fantom the keyboard part for a song needs to be preallocated as part of the performance parameters associated with a song. Sure this restriction can be got round by using RPS.

But... well maybe suddenly I want to play along using a new patch, and maybe that decision is made in the middle of a song.

On two other keyboards I own, the keyboard part is independent of the particular song loaded. I find this SO helpful. I can play along with whatever patch I want whenever I want.
If I feel like playing a particular piano patch all night regardless of song, no problem.

Keyboard design should cater for spontaneity. So why oh why did Roland design it this way?? I'm sure there are good reasons.
For example performance mode allows for different combinations of variables such as splits, patches etc. But these need to be predetermined. Great. But in live performance, play along spontaneity is certainly a loser.
