The best way is the way you like.
I record drum patterns in pattern mode and in the song edit screen i do step rec and assign the patterns to appropriate measure. All other tracks are done in the song mode.
But thats just me.
Anyone can do it the way they like.

that's the way I do it and I find it the quickest method for completing whole songs.

I never really get along with patterns. don't know why. maybe a question of training. I'm a "cubase child" ... i need a linear way of thinking :-)
the other side is that sometimes i loose orientation doing complex songs on the fantom.
so i use it for first ideas and at a certain point i copy the midi-file on my pc...

Making a song through a PC is the best if one has the patience to set it up. But the sequencer in the Fantom X is not at all tough to learn. It has a high resolution sequencer with 480 parts per quarter note (ppqn)
Thats the highest in a workstation but I was shocked when I heard that Tyros 2 ( an arranger keyboard ) has sequencer reolution of 1920 ppqn,
But does not have a dedicated sequencer like that of the X.
