Compression is REALLY the way to go if you want to fatten drums. The cut-off is great to help the drums and bass not fight each other making the overall sound more punchy....example......for a song with a sub bass part, use a hi-pass filter on drums at about 50-60 hz, and a hi-pass on sub bass at about 30 hz,That way they don't compete for the same low freq's. However, I do this in my DAW not the X, and I use it to cut the low freq's out of all parts, meaning if I have a PAD that doesn't have alot of low freq's, I'll use a hi-pass to cut all lows out(even if you can't hear them) to ensure nothing is competing for the same low freq's in the mix. It's like carving out a space for every instrument so you don't get a muddy mix. Check THIS out for some info on using compression(you'll have to scroll down some) And THIS is a good read to understand what I meant by cutting out low freq's and why you should! I hope this brings you some wizdom :)

Hi there disco,

my experience with the Fantom is limited to the last few days as I've only just picked one up BUT

Can I ask in what environment you'd like more punch and, by "more punch" do you mean louder or with more attack ?
It could be a matter of adjusting velocity (if dealing solely with midi info) or compression (in the recording realm)

I'm sorry I can't be of more specific help as I'm new to the Fantom (and this forum !) but I do have some experience working with recorded audio

All the best

Hi E5150

BTW isn't 5150 police code for crazy folks up to no good?(in usa anyway) :)

I believe Disco's wanting to add FATTNESS to the drums like on a CD of your favorite music, and yes, compression is the key. give my links a try.....some good info for quality home recording.

cheers!

LOL :)
Crazy folks up to no good ! Cool

No, I'm not the crazy type (although some might disagree I guess).

I grew up idolising the likes of Black Sabbath & Van Halen - among others.
Sabbath recorded an instrumental piece titled "E5150" and Eddy Van Halen named his home studio "5150 Studios" - I think they even recorded parts of the 5150 album there

When I build my new rehearsal/recording space, I hope to name it E5150

Anyway, back to business-
"Fattness" - gotcha
Yep, compression indeed

I'm reading that Home Studio Guide right now - what a great link !
Thanks heaps spishak
