I am trying to get a Fantom G8 working with a Mac running 10.6.2. Mainly so that I can use it with Sibelius 6. I'm using an M-Audio Uno USB Midi Interface. The M-Audio interface shows up in the Audio Midi Setup program, and I have added the Roland as an External Device and wired up the virtual wires from the Midi interface to the G8.

The problem is that when I test the connection, I don't hear anything on the Fantom. The M-audio interface is pretty idiot proof in that the cable labeled "to in" I have plugged into the In port on the fantom G8, and the cable "to out" is plugged into the out port on the G8. So..

What am I missing? Is there some setup that needs to be done on the fantom?

I would recommend you to use the Fantom-G directly via a USB cable, since it works as an audio/MIDI interface.

Ok thanks for the suggestion, I connected the fantom directly via a USB cable and am able to have the fantom controlled directly *from* the Mac...

One other question, is it possible to have the Fantom generate sound, and have the Mac record what you are playing over midi at the same time (my main reason is to have Sibelius 6 record and notate what I am playing, but so far it seems like you have to switch from an Internal patch to an External patch and select the midi channel).

Of course yes. Then you do not use the G as an audio input or output for your Mac, you simply set it as a MIDI input/output for your track in Sibelius.

Set the fantom G in studio mode, choose your palette of sounds there and in Sibelius use the same midi input number as output number.
