midi through USB... is it possible?

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering, is it possible to get a midi signal through USB? Or do I have to buy a external midi-controller for my laptop?
Untill now, I only have an audio signal through my USB cable. I use Window 7 as operating system.

Tnx!

The Midi USB drivers should be installed with the CD that came with the FG.
I use the FG8 with my PC (Cubase4) and get the Fantom coming up as an IN/OUT midi option together with my other Steinberg USB and M-Audio Midi ports.

Hi Hicko,

You are completely right. I see the midi-controllers, but I don't get a signal. When you used your Fantom in combination with Cubase, did you had to enable something with your Fantom? (a special mode or something like that?)

Hope to hear from you! Tnx :)

Vlekkeloosje: It's been ages since the last time I checked on Cubase, so I don't remember exactly how it handles MIDI ports. Normally you'll need to open up a MIDI in Cubase's track screen, then select Fantom-G as the MIDI input port, setting the track to receive either to omni or to a specific MIDI channel. After that, you'll normally go to Fantom-G's Single mode and switch to External. If you set the Cubase track to receive to omni, you just play the keys. If you set it to a specific channel, just select that channel on the Fantom-G, just where you are, in the External page. Normally you're set to go to play and record.

You will need to enable the midi out channels..

for example, in single mode, hit pad mode, select 10 (midi tx sw) then use pads 1-16 to enable the midi channels. (page 188 of manual)..if you hit pad 1, then you keyboard is a simple midi controller.

if you wish to use studio and live modes for multiple channels a similar operation is required in the relevant settings screen..

You only need that when at Studio or Live modes.
For single-channel control, you can use the Single mode and simply switch channels without having enabled any of the Tx switches.

@ cyclops

Tho relative noob that i am, I do know that by default in single mode the FG does not transmit on MIDI.. and i found this out the hard way..lol :)

Mystic38: When I use my Fantom-G as a master keyboard for recording into Sonar, I use Single mode with all Tx switches OFF. This way, in order to transmit to the channel you want, you simply have to scroll to it with the cursor buttons. When you open a certain Tx switch, say channel 2, you'll only be able to transmit to channel 2. If you want to switch to channel 3 or 4 or something else, you'll have to switch off channel 1 and switch on the channel you want. This way needs more button pushing and definately a little more time. Try to work the way I described to you. For single-channel recording, it's very easy and relatively quicker. ;-)

Hi Cyclops,

I can't get a midi output signal in single mode. I have to follow the steps of Mystic38 to get this signal. Is it possible that this is default not enabled?

make sure in the system settings that MIDI is transmitted via the USB cable, not the MIDI cable.
