Where are my samples?

Post by fismoll7 »

Hello together,

today I Did a "save Project as" on my USB-Stick. Then I worked for some hours with the Stick inside the fantom.

When I now turn on the fantom with the USB-Stick, ALL of my own samples are away. When I start the fantom without the USB-Stick, the new sounds that I created for over 3 Hours are away.
What can I do? And why is there a trap in a simple "save as"?
When I do a "save as" with word or excel, I don´t lose anything? Why do I lose the samples?

Thanks in advance

I had the same thing happen. The only way I avoid loosing samples is from the save samples option under the sample edit screens. They are highlighted which ones are needing saved.

I think they are loaded into sample memory initially, so unless you saved it from the sample edit, I am not sure a way to recover.

If there is a way to recover, i am sure someone here can help. Just sharing my experience.

>Where are my samples?

They have been led by valkyries to bit-Valhalla, the mythic place where unsaved bits go when they die to celebrate their silent but happy afterlife.

>Why do I lose the samples?

Because you did not save them. Next time you will.

I saved the sample

Post by fismoll7 »

Hello together,

i saved the samples weeks before. They had been part of the project that i saved in the project inside the fantom. (only 20MB).
I lost them, when I try to save the project under a new name on the USB-Stick. Please tell me that it isn´t necessary, to save the samples manually again and again, when i try to make a copy of my project.

fismoll7, the only thing I suspect that's happened there is your USB stick not being completely compatible with Fantom-G. But since you have your project saved into internal memory, then you can easily drag all your work to the computer by using the USB Storage mode. Then you can copy the contents in a new project in a USB stick. Try to format your USB stick from within the Fantom-G, after you've copied its contents to your computer of course. If the USB stick continues not saving the sample data, try your luck with another one.

Are you sure you are opening the right project file?

This is getting more and more strange...

Every Week i make a "Save project as" on the USB-Stick.

On the stick are now
FantomG001.Prj
FantomG002.prj
FantomG003.prj
and so on.

There are no samples in the projects! There is only one SND-folder in every Project. Where is the subfolder "samples".

My samples are now in the internal project in the fantom (lucky me). How can i save those samples to my last Project "FantomG005"? Is this right, that save project doesn´t save the samples?

My USB-Stick is 4GB big. Is this to big for the fantom?

Why?

I think you have not completely understood the whole idea with projects...

here.. let me explain (copy-paste from old thread):

Q1: After I work on a project, do I save a "song" or a "project"?
A1: You can think of it like this:

If you play in 2 bands and work on radio spots you would have 3 projects.

Band1.prj
Band2.prj
RadioSpots.prj

Those projects then contain different songs, setups, favorites, samples and SMFs related to the project you are working on.

Q2: How do I create a sample set that will assign the samples to the keys?
A2. Here's one way:

- go to studio mode (press studio)
- press F1 for patch list
- F5 > Select (F8) a Sample Set (or create new empty)
- Now you have the sample set selected in your mixer
- press patch and select your samples for each Tone.
- press Write button for saving, you want to save you song or a Sample Set, not the project (you already done that)

I understand the concept of the projects.
I wrote my samplesets to the project.
The fantom just lose it, when i save the project to the usb-stick.
Learning how to write a sampleset to my project doesn´t help me because I know how to do this.

Then I suggest you investigate the USB stick and its Fantom G compatibility, and try rescue/undelete tools that might retrieve the lost data.

If you create a sample, then drop it into a song, and save the song, then the sample is written to the project.

If you create some samples, edit them in the sample list, then you need to perform a SAVE ALL (F3 UTIL) in the Sample List in order to write them to the project file. Anything with a check mark in the sample list needs to be saved. Also, make sure you're at 1.20 as you can mark individual samples within the list and save just the samples you want. This way you don't end up saving samples you don't need and wasting memory.

Hallo Dan,

thank you for the informations. I´ve got still some question concerning my samples.

I am still on OS 1.1. because I didn´t need the sequencer improvements which was the biggest part of 1.2.
A am willing to change to 1.2. but this is not possible before my samples are save :-)

Are there any problems with the file-system in OS 1.1.
My samples are saved to the internal project (I saved the samples and samplesets to the project).
What´s the right way to get those samples out of my fantom.
Is save project as normally the right way? Then I might have some problems with my usb-Stick.
Is there another way to save the samples with the editor software?

Thanks in advance

Yes, there was a **major** update on the USB support in 1.20. That was the biggest part of the 1.20 update, not the sequencer updates...

With Roland USB drivers installed on PC/Mac:

Press MENU>F3>F1 while connected via USB cable to a PC/MAC and you get access to your internal samples.

Press MENU>F3>F2 while connected via USB cable to a PC/MAC and you get access to your USB drive samples.

Save your samples as described above and in several other threads and forget how you have been doing it so far, specially the way you save the whole project when saving a sampleset or song would suffice.

Then please update to the newest OS to get rid of problems.

Try reading the thread below on this forum. It also addresses your issue.
