G8 - how do you transport it?

Post by Lukeofkeys »

Hi!

I've got the G8 and it's a monster machine! I really enjoy playin it! I would love to use it in my band too! I'd like to split, layer sounds, use the pads as sample-starters etc.....it just would be great to have it on stage!

But there's one problem, the G8 is the biggest and heaviest workstation I've ever seen! I mean the width is acceptable, the 88 keys need their space and the depth is also bearable although it's bordering on the acceptable limits!
But had it to become soo high? I mean the OASYS 88 is just 13,5 cm high and I think it's technically at least as complex as the G! The height really makes the thing looking big!

Now, I don't wanna use a softbag for transport, because it's just too dangerous, the large glassy-display, the metallic surface etc....
So if I use a hardcase it makes the G about 15-20 cm fatter, about 10cm wider and about 5-10 cm deeper....(well I dunno if I can say deeper, my english isn't that good, but i mean the lenght from front to back)....
Well and it makes it about 5-10kg heavier (or even more, haven't had a hard case yet)!
So, I had already problems with getting my 61 note keyboard to the rehersals and til now I havent got a clue how to get this thing to my bands place!

Has anybody got the same problem/impression? What did u do?

greets, thanks
Luke

P.s: I didn't want to nag around here, the G is a monster machine like I said, and I know, the size isn't fixable with OS updates ;)...just felt lost with my feelings :D

Hit the gym or get a roadie? :D

No, seriously... I have the G6 and even it is heavy for my back.

But wait, lt me give you a "Roland solution": You can get TWO Fantom Gs. One for home and one for the rehearsals and then you just transport the USB thumbdrive!

Well I already thought about buying a 2nd G8 but when I asked my budged I got a clear "NO" :D...
So I have to hit the gym then... ;)

Would be interesting why the thing actually got so heavy and high?! IS it because of the Hammer-action keyboard or are the electronical parts sooo big and heavy? :D

well, thx

It's mind-boggling why Roland made these keyboards bigger and heavier ... Definitely going in the wrong direction ...

I wasn't interested in the Fantom Series til the G came out! How about the X series? How big and heavy have they been?

I have an X7 with hard case that I perform out with occasionally ... THAT'S as big and heavy as I will EVER go ... And my size and strength are certainly above average ... However, I refuse to subject the X7 to wheeling around ... BUT ... carrying it with one arm is not, IMO, friendly to anybody's back, either ...

On the other hand, I really don't want something built as crappy as a Korg M50, either ... (Can't really comment on Juno Stage as I haven't checked one out extensively ... No aftertouch, no thanks ... )

I have an x8 and it is big and heavy. But how can you have a weighted keyboard without it being heavy. Maybe someday in the future.

When I use it live I have someone help me lift it up and down stairs and in and out of vehicles. The case has wheels otherwise and is manageble on flats.

I transported my G8 this weekend. In the back of my trailer wrapped in 5 blankets. I would LOVE to find a hard case that is not too high priced if anyone knows of one. I have a huge one that will hold it, but it is about 1 inch too high. Killing me.

No.
It should be released at Winter NAMM.

In the days of NAMM '09 it may seem strange to open this thread all of a sudden, but we're here to help each other, right?

I got my Warwick Rockbag for the G8 yesterday, and it's great. Sure, it's huge, but it's got very thick padding and (believe it or not) there is room for cables and pedals in there too! A pair of wheels helps to save your back but why they bothered to include a shoulder strap is beyond me. There are easier ways to kill yourself...

Is it a Softcase? Could you post a link? I was searching for softcases which are able to cover such huge instruments but I wasn't successful!
