Can you layer drums across the keys?

Do you think this could be condidered the modern day ASR 10. Im looking for a keyboard with a sampler were I can sample in my own drums and layer them across the keyboard and such. Much like the ARS 10. I was wondering if this could be done on the G.

I think this can be done with the pads on the G but if thats the case Im gonna go ahead and just get the MPC5000 and an controller. What im really looking for is the MPK4900 (MPC5000 + MPK49, yet to exsit).

Please let me know how these compare, if the G has what I need or anykeyboard that can. Or should I just gohead and get the MPC5000.

I THINK you can assign a drum or beat to the pads but not to the actual keyboard for beats...i may be wrong here....

I'm sure u can layer a drum sample across the pads. I use the fantom-s, and I'm able to assign samples to the keys and play them at different pitches depending on the trigger note. I'm sure you can do the same on the G.
The biggest advantage of using the MPC is the sequencer. But I suspect the sequencer on the G will be on par with the MPC. Plus you'll have all these synthesis capabilities to create your own unique sounds.
Based on what I know about the S, I'd say you can't go wrong with the Fantom-G.

Thanks for the heads ups. yea the sequencer on the G is one of the reasons I like the thing so much.
Oh, what synthesis capabilties? On the G or the MPC.

Just about any workstation/sampler in existence can do this.

On the previous Fantoms, you had patches and rhythm kits, and the G adds "sample kits" which allow to use sample even easier. You can make a drum kit in a few seconds, and lay it out on either keys or pads.

As of the synthesis, we're talking about the G here, it has a lot of ways to modify the samples, use them as raw materials to create new sounds.

Look Fantom G manual pages 126-128.

I understand what EVERYONE is saying BUT......

The thing is this.......

I have gone through the "G" manual with a FINE TOOTH COMB.......

Sure it has LOTS of ways to modify a sample and add effects and such....

but what happened to the SIMPLICITY of recording a sample and then ASSIGNING it to the Keys and having it ALREADY LAID OUT ACROSS the keys at varying pitches and spreeds??????

this was SO EASY to do on the X and it could be done from the sample edit screen immediately after sampling....

I understand that you can achieve the same thing with the G but I'll be DAMNED if I have to assign the sample to each key and then MANUALLY change the Pitch and Speed for each key!!!!

That's TOO MUCH to go through...

No, no, guys, you're misunderstanding something. On the, samples can be used within patches and rhythm kits just like on the X, but also in the new sample sets. Assigning one sample to be pitched chromatically on the keys is done with a patch just like before, no worries.

Thanks art...

but could you tell us how....(Perhaps a reference page in the manual)

because I have scoured the manual....and I cant even find instructions on how to get a sample ON the keys...let alone in the manner you speak of...

One sample on a key is not layering anything thats one sample. If you think you can get a Fantom to replace an Mpc your gonna get a headache.I own mpc's and workstations there nothing like each other at all.Mpc's can layer multiple samples per pad with each layer velocity switching.

They are two different beast's.Do yourself the favor and get both.

bobbybland, the Fantoms can also layer and velocity-switch up to 4 sounds per key. MPCs are great for straightforward sample-based production work, but lack the great depth of sound design and processing that the Roland offers on their machines.

You can do this on the G, I spoke with Roland and you can map samples across the keyboard. On the X you go to the sample list and you check all the samples you want and create a "rhythm" patch and it assigns them chromatically for you. The guy at Roland said this is a standard feature on the G, you can assign to the whole keyboard, not just the pads. Lokk up creating a rhythm set.

Thanks....but

I am NOT talking about a Rhythm set.......

I am talking about taking ONE sample and putting that SAME SAMPLE (Not several different samples) and assigning it to the KEYBOARD and having the ORIGINAL sample play at C4 while EVERY OTHER KEY plays that SAME SAMPLE at varying speeds and pitches......

I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO SET UP EVERY KEY..........
