Is it possible for Roland to say something without saying it
Re: Is it possible for Roland to say something without sayin
Jesse,
That just a plain-old two-tier X-stand ... the second tier has an aluminum (?) shelf that I had made — inexpensive — at a local metal shop ...
The reason the stand might look a little unusual is the high angle I took the photo at as to hide all the wires in back ...
Jim,
Yeah ... Not much to whine about with the HS-80ms ... It took a little while to get my ears used to the sound — a little mid-forward as they say. But as they also say, the mixes translate well, sound good and they didn't cost a "fortune" (like say, ADAMs) ...

Diametro, I'll be in a market for near-fields or conventional mid-size self-powered monitors, would you recommend JBL? (can't imagine staring at YAMAHA logos every day!)
Re: Is it possible for Roland to say something without sayin
@Diametro
Add a subwoofer and the HS80s do an even better job, leaving only little to wish (and which only *very* expensive Adams or Genelecs provide).
What also helped surprisingly well to eliminate some small remaining unwelcome resonances in a suboptimal home studio environment, was putting the nearfields on top of a professional foam basis (don't know the English expression for that kind of material).
@Artemio
No, the JBLs I heard in that price range (mid price nearfields) did not sound as good to me as the Yamahas. They weren't bad either, but just mediocre in my ears. Some relatively small JBLs though sound quite well in the price range of normal computer monitors. If Yamaha Logos hurt the eyes of a Roland guy, just paint them over or put a Roland Logo on top

Diametro: Ok!
Artemiy: Get some Roland/pin-up stickers and stick them on top of that motorcycle logo.
I'm pretty sure I will get the new mini genelecs 8010 or 8020, they are pretty damn nice for homework, just had a listen at them the other day at the shop that is in the same block I live in. I think I will borrow them for a weekend for some testing..
http://www.genelec.com/firststep/
We have the 8050A Genelecs in one room of the studios I work at and I say the 8010/8020 compare quite nicely for being so small and 'cheap' (relatively). I won't be needing lots of volume at home, so they'd be quite ok.. but I love silk dome tweeters, and Genelec don't use them.
I always get ear fatigue from Genelecs, the metal calotte tweeters are razor sharp. In 4 hours, I am totally exhausted.
With silk tweeters, like on the Profel 5.1 system (around 6000€) I have in the mastering room, I can/could work for 12 hours without any problems!
Artemiy, I say go take a trip somewhere where you can have a listening session, don't buy without listening! It's worth it.

jessej:
Been looking at the 8050As, ADAM P22s (or S2.5As), and maybe I'll give the Dynaudio BM15As another listen.
Using HR824s right now. Know them like the back of my hand, but they're ten years old, are kinda crapping out, and it's time to move up.
REALLY want a pair of Barefoot MM27s (heard them over the weekend), but... $7500 is more than I'd like to spend. Thoughts?
In the market for new monitors right now. No one seems to make anything in the 2-3k range with 8" drivers. Not a fan of subs, and speakers with 6" drivers just don't go low enough (need 35-40Hz).We have the 8050A Genelecs in one room of the studios I work at...

If you liked your Mackies you should give the HR824mk2 a try. They got good reviews over here.
Re: Is it possible for Roland to say something without sayin
Audacity: What Jimknopf said ^^
Or take your old HR824s and drive to somewhere where they have lots of speakers and compare.. or better yet, have some brought to your room for a weekend test drive.
I think what speakers work for you is the most important aspect. You are used to your HR824s and that is your reference point. You heard hundreds or thousand of reference songs on them, and that is the picture you have of the world. So get new ones that represent that world view for you, hopefully the view is clearer and wider and deeper, but the same colors and hue, maybe more colorful?

Re: Is it possible for Roland to say something without sayin
Thanks, guys. I'll be borrowing a pair of ADAM S2.5As and BM15As in a few weeks. If my mixes aren't notably better, I'll definitely stay in the Mackie fold.
Actually, I'm in the process of dumping the ENTIRE STUDIO. Keeping my V-Synth, PCM91, Glyph drives, JP-8080, and that's about it.
PT|HD and Waves can bite my butt. Apogee Symphony and UAD-2, here I come!

Art, I'm am absolutely not a resource when it comes to monitors ... I bought the Yammies because the salesperson highly recommended them over all the other usual suspects and they sounded better in the very short time I spent evaluating them ... However, I am happy with them ... and my newest mixes have translated quite well to my old cheap monitors ... )
As for the Yamaha logo ... I agree with you there ... Except that I never notice them, the white lighting is tasteful and the actual Yamaha letters aren't illuminated ... If that's really all that's stopping you, you might want to reconsider ... Looks, IMO, are a strong suit as they look completely professional yet unobtrusive except for the cone which is white ... maybe so you won't bump into it ... (of course, like NS-10s ... never heard them but they look pretty funky ... )

Like to say Thinks to Everyone here at the Fantom Clan for Allowing me back!
Re: Is it possible for Roland to say something without sayin
understanding
please take this constructively:
Make some effort to type your posts well. I believe you wanted to say "Thanks to Everyone..." and not "Thinks to Everyone..." on your last post. This may be crucial if you want to pass your message correctly.
