ASK for an advice and opinion Guys.

Post by tunukie »

First of all I would like to thank in advance in giving me your opinion....

I own a fantom G6 for almost 4years now, It had given me satisfaction in playing music. Honestly I really love this workstation so much. and of course the sequencer is Damn so nice.... Easy to create songs. On the other hand I also had a disappointment with regards to Roland with regards to the OS updates.. To this point someone wants me to trade for his Korg OASYS 76 synth. Do you think its a good decision to let this Fantom Go? I know Korg OASYS is expensive but on the other hand its much more older than the Fantom G in terms of technology.
My fantom G6 has a 1GIG of RAM and has a ARX01 expansion card... Hope you can give me an advise with regards to sound quality, music production (just standalone workstation.)
Lastly I am versatile to music genre, but as for now I am concentrating on orchestral sounds and techno. would the OASYS stand out rather than the G?

At the end of the day, its all about what works for you..
for me its all about workflow, I have had the fantom so long that i don't have to think or learn anything to achieve my goal.
My argument has always been that if your workflow is fluid with what you have and your work is also attached to it.. dumping one for the other is a major transition.
You have to relearn your workflow and somehow get all your work from one to the other.

The only way to really move over is the have both and then when your ready release one, unless your not as tied down to the fantom in the way i described.

I don't have a Fantom so can't comment on that - but I do have an OASYS 88.

There are too many plus and minus for both keyboards to list them here - but;

With the O you have Karma but that is only a plus if you want to use it! The O doesn't have a drum track - not a problem if you don't need that.

The O I would say, is more powerful sonically than the Fantom - the O has 7 engines which can be mixed and a very powerful effects section. However - and it is a big however - the workflow is complex on the O; not nearly as straightforward as the Roland approach I see in the JP-80 for example.

I would never ever part with my O simply because of the amount of time I have invested in sound creation - and I would argue is the best workstation that has been produced.

But you really need to compare and contrast the 2 boards and see what works best for you.

The answer is simple. If you want something 'different' then get something different. If you are anything like me then the differences are what you desire. I bought my G for that reason. I wanted to get away from my PC studio. The G is not 'better' than my PC studio. But it is very different & I love that. The korg will definitely give you a feeling of 'newness'. Which is likely to inspire you to create new music. That's a good thing.

Please don't think in terms of 'discontinued' & 'unsupported'. When we do, we are buying into the industry's lazy new workflow. They release unfinished & sometimes 'broken' software & then expect to release patches to fix what is 'wrong' with the system. The fact that we 'expect' these updates is the reason that they get away with it. If V1.0 doesn't cut it, don't buy it!

I bought my G when the OS was still 1.0. The same reasons for my initial purchase are the reasons that i want to keep it. The software updates have added some 'extra' features. But, i never would have bought it with hopes that roland might some day make it worth the purchase. All things considered, the korg will likely have many 'extras' added in the future. The g will not. I have lots of 'unsupported' gear in my arsenal. these devices still serve me well.

if you enjoy different workflows for different gear then I'm pretty sure you'll have fun with your new korg. I say go for it. If you're expecting to have all of the same PLUS more, I'm not sure any workstation can provide that. at best they are 'different' like apples & oranges.

anyway, if apples tasted like oranges, I'd have no use for them.

better is just a matter of taste & our tastes tend to change over time.

as for the question of 'should i let the fantom go?'.. I'm kind of a hoarder, so i wouldn't know about getting rid of things. I'm all for your idea of buying something new though :)
