Windows 7 64 bit, Cubase, Fantom G VST editor

Post by jahrome »

I just purchased my first PC running Windows 7 64 bit. I am having issues trying to get the Fantom G to open as a plugin with Cubase 6. While Cubase sees the plugin and I can assign it to a track, it will not opem up the Fantom G editor.

Anyone having any success?

Hi jahrome,
Iirc later versions of Cubase and the FG editor are not on speaking terms.. Same as sonar and s70xs.. You may likely need to run it in standalone mode.

Mystic thanks for the update. I spent the last 2 hours pulling out the few hairs left on my head..

Is this a Cubase problem or a Fantom editor problem?

its kinda difficult to say... again, IIRC it came about when steinberg made a major change in cubase5 (to support vst3.0) and since then the FG editor doesnt work.. so given it worked with earlier versions of cubase, i should suspect that Steinberg did some things differently in their vst implementation.

Roland are aware of it and stated they are not going to update the editor, and i would guess steinberg will be equally customer sensitive..lol.

I dont know how wedded you are to cubase, but the new Sonar x1 is quite a dream to use..

..and pls keep those last hairs!.. they get more valuable as you get older!..lol

So no software update for the Fantom G nor an update for its plugin editor.....

I am not exactly married to Cubase...but it and Nuendo are just simple to use compared to other DAWs I have attempted to use (Pro Tools, Logic, DP).

on my cubase + FG8 setup i just use my G8 in studio mode as a sound module and play using the G8's nice keybed... and use the Cubase as my main sequencer + VST's.

then do G8's sounds (midi to audio mixdown) into cubase and then final mixdown with the VST's.

i use Steinberg's Ci2+ as my audio interface with MBP. they updated the driver a few days ago and made heavy VST's play a lot smoother at 128samples (about 6.8ms latency slightly faster than using G8 as audio interface). :)

there have been major changes to sonar for x1 from 8.5 most noticeable is a more streamlined and arguably more logical gui and control interface.... Its very different from earlier versions so diehard fans were peed however the learning curve is much easier than earlier versions for new folks, it manages screen real estate far better and there is actually some logic in tool assignment/useage.. and the included plug-ins are not too shabby either... personally i get along with it quite well.

and yes, the fg editor works!... i can ship you the FG sonar ins file if you wish and u cant find it.

Which version of Cubase? I am working the same way but the Fantom G editor crashes Cubase 6.

It seems to me that kenchan doesn't use the editor at all. It's not really necessary to work with the FG and a software sequencer.

The ins file is a file for Sonar which contains the names of the patches and their according program change midi instructions for a single keyboard, in this case the FG. By using them in sonar, you can select the patches for the midi channels directly in Sonar and save it as part of the song/project.

this is correct. i dont like the FG's sequencer so i only use the FG as a sound module (studio mode) and use the G8's nice keybed and controller to record MIDI into cubase. As a sound module, i use FG's large screen to edit my sounds. FG's got a nice sound editor imho.

while it's not necessary to use cubase it just makes more sense to me as it's a much better sequencer and can drop in VST's and other plug-ins vs forcing the FG to do things it can't do.

honestly i should be using Logic since im a Apple user but future tells me i will need cross-platform sequencer so ive kept using my cubase since 1990.
