Configuring fantom g6 as midi controller in Sonar 8 Producer
Configuring fantom g6 as midi controller in Sonar 8 Producer
I have my G6 connected via usb, when I open an instrument in Sonar and record using the fantom, I can only hear the instruments and what is being played if I record and playback. In other words how can control synths and instruments without recording.

Are you trying to use you G only to trigger your instruments (vst) on sonar? or also as the playback instrument for the output of your midis on sonar?
are you trying to use the g as a controller in studio or life mode?

Yes, is there a way I can do both? I've tried it in both studio and live, but I can't get it to work. I can see what is being recorded in the piano roll and hear it when I play it back, but I can't get it to control the instruments without recording.

ok, I don't know sonar, but I guess you would basically need to assign the output of each midi track to the fantom. the midi channel for each track should be the part on the fantom you want it to go to.
on the fantom you'd nee to parts:
A -
Turn send midi signal "on".---> Hit PAD MODE - then PAD #10. With this you should be sending midi signal in studio mode.
B -
Turn "Local Sounds OFF" -----> under system settings, go to SOUND. The top option will be "Local Switch". Turn it off. This is to avoid the midi signal to loop between sonar and the fantom. When Local is off, the fantom is kind of muted unless its sounds are trigged by an external device. In your case that would be sonar.
This is the settings I'm using with cubase. Good luck...

there is no need to turn the fantom local control off if you have sonar..
there is a per track, or global option to disable input echo of midi tracks.. i set mine to off in global option.
In this case, when using the fantom as the sound generator
a) when you play, you hear yourself
b) when you record, you see the midi activity in the track but you hear the sound direct from your playing. The recorded midi data is NOT retransmitted (looped) back as you have disabled input echo
c) when you playback recorded tracks you hear it.
To play a VST without recording:
1. turn input echo on for that track
2. Deselect keyboard parts in the live or studio set and select an external track for the keyboard on the fantom

Mystic38 - That must be even nicer. But all three (a,b,and c,) are also possible when local is off. the only thing is if I don't have my DAW open or a midi channel selected and routed to a part in the Fantom, I won't hear anything from the fantom itself.
so, when using the fantom by itself, i put local back on.

i was not inferring that turning local control on/off did not achieve the same thing just that with Sonar there is the setup flexibility to do things a different way....
you dont have to make ANY changes to local control.. so DAW on or DAW off, the board simply works

What are the connections between your PC and the G for doing what you want? I'm a newbie and I would like to record VSTi sounds in the G or something like that. Thanks in advance.

I'm only using the USB cable and the settings described above.
what exactly you mean be recording VSTi sounds in the G? Like import midi files?

To record a VSTi into the Fantom G you only need the USB cable..
1. set the daw audio master, or channel audio output to "fantom G" to send the audio data to the Fantom G
2. set the input on fantom G to "USB-Audio" so that it receives this audio data
3. press "mix-in" to hear without recording in the fantom G to set recording levels
this is well covered in the various Roland tutorials, micro manual and fantom Manual..

Thanks Mystic, but when I press mix-in I can hear the VST sound but I don't know hoy to record it into the sequencer.

Select an audio track, press record, change input to USB-Audio and hit start.
Again, this is well covered in basic material so I really encourage you to read the tutorials and see some youtube videos.
