Can somebody, anybody, give me step by step instructions to hook my G6 up to Sonar 8 as the midi controller to control sounds in Sonar.

step one: ensure that the hardware is compatible with the minimum requirements of your software.

someone can take step two. (you can only post one step per post).

ken is such an authoritarian!..lol.. heres a 12-pack

1. install the FG driver
2. connect via usb
3. on fantom hit pad mode>midi tx sw> ensure pad 1 is lit
4. install the FG ins file into sonar for patch descriptions
5. open a midi track, set input to famtom omni, set output to sound card synth
6. bang keys and make noise
7. load any old GM smf into sonar
8. set sonar midi output to Fantom
9. set fantom to studio mode
10. press play in sonar and make multi channel noise
11. assume it all works fine and you just need to set channles and patches properly
12. do NOT assume you can start/stop sonar from fantom

Mystic - you forgot to power on. 12-pack is usesless if your equipment is OFF. ;)

this is why you must post only one step per post so that we do not forget critical information.

Step2 : unbox software from box.

step one: buy hardware

Step Two: buy software

maybe other way around to help ensure compatability and avoid upgrade requirements

what about recording the midi events on cubase using the fantom as the controller and also as the output for the midi on cubase??? the midi signal seems to loop coming from and back to the fantom....

a package with all the steps would be fine... Lol

You would have to turn "Local" off on the Fantom to avoid double note triggering, this tend to make the sounds very thin.

You should look it up. Read a little more about the basics of midi, as it is same for all keyboards, midi devices.

But Local on is where keyboard plays internal sounds, Local off is where keyboard does not play internal sounds, one way or the other the keyboard should output midi via the MIDI out connector.

not currently in a position to give great answer, look it up in FG manual index.

At what point did it switch to cubase? lol

Good point Flumpster ;-), I also thought it was Sonar...

@ELISCHUMANN,

Please refer to the Fantom G Owners Manual - Pages 286-300 - **System Settings (Settings Common to All Modes)**

**Fantom G Owners Manual - Page 286, how to enter System settings...**

System Settings (Settings Common to All Modes)
Settings that affect the entire operating environment of the Fantom- G, such as tuning and MIDI message reception, are referred to as system functions. This section explains how to make settings for the System functions and describes the functions of the different System parameters.
1. Press [MENU] to open the Menu window.
2. Press or to select “System,” and then press [ENTER].
The System Setup screen appears.
fig.25-001_50
F-key operations in the System Setup screen
3. The parameters are organized into several edit groups. Use [F1 (Up)] [F2 (Down)] to switch tabs.
4. Use [CURSOR] to move the cursor to the parameter you wish to modify.
When the cursor is located at a parameter value, you can press
[ENTER] to access a window for setting the value. • When all the parameters cannot be shown within a single settings
screen, a scroll bar will be displayed at the right side of the screen. In such cases, press to scroll the screen downward.
5. Turn the VALUE dial or press [INC] [DEC] to get the value you want.
6. Repeat steps 3–5 to set each System parameter you want to edit.
7. To save the settings you modified, press [F7 (Sys Write)] and perform the Write operation. If you do not want to save, press [EXIT] to return to the previous screen.

**Fantom G Owners Manual - Page 293, Local Switch**

Local Switch
The Local Switch determines whether the internal sound generator is disconnected (OFF) from the controller section (keyboard, pad, pitch bend/modulation lever, knobs, buttons, D Beam controller, pedal, and so on); or not disconnected (ON). Normally this is left “ON,” but if you wish to use the Fantom-G’s keyboard and controllers to control only external sound modules, set it to “OFF.”
Value: OFF, ON
Using the Local Switch
If you’re using external sequencer software in conjunction with the Fantom-G’s keyboard/controllers and sound generator, you should turn the Local switch OFF for the reasons explained below.
Connecting the Fantom-G to an external sequencer fig.25-003b_50
Typically, things are hooked up so the data travels as follows: the Fantom-G’s keyboard → your external sequencer software → the Fantom-G’s sound generator. Normally, the Fantom-G’s keyboard section is internally connected to its sound generator section; this internal connection is controlled by the Local Switch. If you turn the Local Switch off, the Fantom-G’s keyboard and sound generator sections will be independent, allowing you to use the connection described above with your external sequencer software.

I hope it helps
Paulo

**P.S: Although I recon that the Roland Manuals are not he best explaining things in detail, however I suggest that they MUST be read first, when buying an equipment with this complexity**

hahah, It's incredibly how lazy I was to look it up on the manual. The manual was just sitting on my messy desk the whole time.

Thanks a lot, that was very simple.

oh, I never used Sonar....
