Fantom G / Fantom X

Post by dtscape »

Forward planning a bit here......

Is it possible, on both the G & X, to trigger a sample loop on a pad and at the same time trigger another sample(a recorded click track) which is sent to a different audio channel?

Are the effects on a Fantom X exceptable? What I mean is, are they limiting to what is capable compared to the G range (particularly in Live/Performance and sequencer)?

I'm trying to decide on getting either a Fantom G7 or a Fantom X7... The G seems superior but, as i can see on here, opinions vary so much because of the original soundset (by all accounts the X range is better?) But I will be editing patches a lot so that may not be a problem. Also the price difference is quite significant!!!!

Both can trigger two samples which are from different MIDI parts or go into different audio outputs. However, yes, on the G you have the advantage of 20 effects processors vs. 5 on the X. If you plan to have it as a standalone instrument, I'd recommend the G.

Can you confirm to me something about the effects on the G?
Are you able to have different multiple effects on a couple of different patches within a Live set (ie. Piano with distotion, delay, phaser. Strings with leslie, stereo delay and flanger)?

I',m planning on using a G7 to replace 3 keyboards... I've thought it through and think I will be able to do it... especially if I use the sample function to play chords when i need a major part of the keyboard to play solo's etc. and then have a sampled sequencer loop triggered of the pads.

Another thing... Are you able to trigger a sampled sequencer (to save polyphony) loop onto a pad and have this run so when you change a patch (next live set) in Live mode the loop still plays?

Within a live set, one patch can only have one dedicated processor, plus sends global chorus/delay and reverb.

In a studio set, you also get two additional processors for chaining with the dedicated patch processors. But not in live mode, only in studio.

Also, you have about 10 algorithms which already include dual effects, such as flanger and delay, distortion and flanger etc.

Thank you. I'm slowly getting a better understanding of what the Fantom G is capable of.... As i said i'm looking to replace 3 keyboards (Korg Triton Classic (61) with moss board, Roland D50 (61) and a Korg 01/Wfd(61) ) with a Fantom G7. I'm sure I'll have the flexability to do what I need... especially with the sample functions which I've never really used on the Triton.

Are you able to have a sample loop running and still change patches (in live, studiom or patch mode)without interupting the looping sample?

Yes, sure, you can do it. Within a single studio or live set, on certain parts you can have samples playing via keyboard, pads or triggered via the sequencer, and you can change patches on other parts without any problems.

Thanks....

i'm still finding it difficult to decide on what's best. I know Mr Jem Godfrey used both the Xs and Gs in live situation and covered every base needed for his music (Frost*). Mine will not be as complicated but you never know....The Gs effects and sampling functionality is a real teaser but the price is a concern as well as a lot of peoples comments about the soundset being a tad disappointing. If I get an X I can keep hold of my Triton... If I get a G i will need to sell all my keyboards(Roland D50, Korg 01/Wfd, Triton Classic, Yamaha DX7).

In Jem Godfrey's geek edition (for Black Light Machine song) he shows how he triggers samples on particular notes on the keyboard... these are amongst other sound patches (ie. within an octave he has one patch but on 3 of the seperate notes, within the octave, he is triggering samples). Is this also possible on the X?

Also he splits a looped sample across a section of keyboard so he can keep the loop in time with the drums by playing it manually(rather than sending a click to the drummer)...
Is this also possible on an X?

In terms of sample and patch manipulation, X can do everything the G can do. Their major technical difference is the amount of effects (20 on the G vs. 5 on the X), the sequencer (128+24 phrase-based tracks on the G vs. 16+8 linear tracks on the X), storage (faster USB drive on the G, PC card on the X), maybe also interfacing (G has USB audio, mic/guitar input).

@ dtscape

Now, I would say, with your setup/configuration, just go for the Fantom G.

For additional good sounds for the Fantom G here a link to nearly 160 patches for free:

Good luck and cheers

Cheers guys.... The G is my prefered choice but trying to find a REASONABLY priced G7 is rare..... I've seen a G6 going for £1400 which I think is overpriced!!!!! I'm tempted but I really think the 76 key version will allow me that little bit extra. Especially as I'm trying to replace 3 keyboards with 1....

Can anyone recommend a second hand place to search for keyboards etc.? (other than Sound On Sound and ebay as I check those everyday).
