Dear Mr Roland,

we need help.

Please publish workshops on the following

1. File structure, from the Project, through the phrase, to the smf. It strange and noboby really seems to get it, and just as I am strating to understand, I seem to forget. It seems to be the root of much frustration for Fantom G Owners.

2. Example workflows, in a concise form. There are so many great features with this powerful beast. It's overwhelming!

I surely think that help in these areas would put an end to ney sayers and whinners. You've given us just too much in one little keyboard.

the file structure thing is not really needed. (not talking about your workshop), but the file structure feature.

and even if you argue that it is needed, what don't you understand about it. there is the project folder and inside of the project folder their are subfolders that hold different things like phrases, samples, songs, patches, etc.... that's pretty much all their is to it. if you can't remember which folders are holding which types of files, then just get a notepad and write it and keep it somewhere easy to find (like taped to your FG)!

everyone has a different workflow... at least I assume they do. (at least slightly different) so how can they give a "concise" recommendation for workflow and how a project/song should be completed?

I personnally dont have a problem with it, but everytime we upgrade someone has problems with lost songs, lost sounds, etc. I believe the problem is with a lack of a true understanding on file structure and file handling. I have recently read every thing I could fine and there seems to be a lack of actual discription of the Project Concept and to utilize it.

this is my process of thinking:

all you have have to do is upgrade the software on your fantom... completely independent of ANY OF YOUR PROJECTS.

don't even load your project when you get ready to do the operating system update. just put the OS upgrade on a flash (it can even be the one with all your projects on it) (but since you all are losing stuff, I'd recommend to not use the same flash drive) after the OS updates, STILL DON'T LOAD A PROJECT.

now you need to do a factory reset. after that is complete make a brand new project folder on your flash drive (on the computer). then just copy over whatever you need from your old project into the newly made project (folder by folder)

and then open the editor to copy your sounds (again on a computer)

and you should be good to go!!!

Speaking for myself, I think that the confusion has come from a misunderstanding about what a Project actually is. My intuition tells me that a Project is an individual song, and I just blindly followed my intuition before really taking the time to learn the lingo. Knowing just what a project is, I'm sure, will help me become more successful in saving my work. I just wish there was a way to load more than one project at a time, so I could seamlessly tie the Sinevibes Mega Pack into my existing project (not that I'm complaining--I love my Fantom G!)

why can't you just combine the things from the two projects that you want. then you can just load one of them....?

are the sound vibes expansions so big that you can't combine it with another project.

The Project

I am suggesting Roland did a poor job of explaining the concept of Projects in the manual and other associated documentation. I am looking for something like this:

This document helped me put the project in prospective for the MV8800, but the concept has advanced a little on the Fantom G, and I am suggesting Roland give us users a document to help this concept seep into our thick headed brains.

And yes, the information is out there in an abbreviated form in the manual and other document, but a concise description with graphical references just doesn't exist.

It's not that the Project concept is bad, it is just a little different than many of the things us keyboard/workstation players are use to. (as already posted here, is it one song, one set of songs?)

One other topic to go along with this is how the Fantom G handles projects with respects to bootup, backup and this so call temporary memory, where things disappear when I shut down or load another project. Maybe this document somewhat covers the topic:

but how it relates to projects and what happens when I upgrade is a little confusing for most. And learning these things through "trail and error" is frustrating to most. And telling a person to simply backup your project prior to upgrading does not get it back into the active memory once they are done.

I have not lost any sounds or song or files as yet in the FG, but I know many who have and I've seen them ready to sell the Fantom G on ebay, at a financial lost, due to this frustration. (PS, I did lose my song when updating the Motif XS, so, I have felt the pain and yes, I quit using the Motif sequencer completely, that's what motifated me to switch to the Fantom G as my primary workstation.)

If you are working with projects on a USB stick instead of internal memory like everyone here tells everyone to do then you will never lose any of your songs or data when you update.

The updates only alters the internal memory so don't save there.

Now that I understand the Project concept, it seems easy enough. I will say this though: I've read the manual and watched 2 instructional DVDs, and I didn't learn about the whole concept of a project and the necessity of saving it to USB until I joined the Roland Clan. So, thanks, guys....I'm happy to be here.
