Fantom G, Mbox 2 Mini and Pro tools Sync Set Up.

Post by svppromo »

Im trying to sync my fantom and pro tools so I can Track out my beats in the FG. Mbox 2 mini doesnt have midi ports soI got the cable (Uno Plug - Midi to Usb). I also have my Mackie Hui controlling pro tools and I want pro tools to control the fantom.

What do I do after Connecting everything?

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I forgot about your post and it is difficult to navigate through the roland forum. I have had so much trouble with this issue and have found very little help. I have even had two guys that are very familiar with music production come out to help me with no avail. However I have figured out how to sync the fg with pro tools.

With my fantom g I am using a mbox2 and Protools 8. Don't sweat it I know that you are using a mbox mini and I will go over that. Hopefully these are easy instruction but it not just reply with questions.

1.Download the Fantom G Drivers to your computer. If you do not do this pt will not recognize the fg.
2.Since you are using a Mbox Mini you do not have to have midi cables like you first thought. Connect your fg to your computer with an A to B usb cable (the one that printers use). If you look on the top right of your fantom there is a slot labeled computer. This is where you connect the usb cable.
3.Connect your Mbox Mini to your computer into another usb port. You must have this connected for protools to work.
4.Open up protools and turn on your fg.
5.When pts opens up go to Setup then Midi then Midi Studio Setup.Create a new insturment. Make the Roland Fantom your new insturment. On Input Port select your Mbox and on Output select Mbox Emulated.
6.Next setup your Ins and Outs by going to Setup I/O setup.Go to Output, since this is Midi select mono next to Out 1-2 and check 1 (a M with appear) go to Input and and do the same thing. Then click OK
7.Amost Done. Now go to your FG and Push Menu then Go to System. Go to Sync/Tempo then Sync Mode and set to SLAVE-MIDI. Set Sync Output to off,Clock SOurce to Midi, MMc Mode to Slave and MMC output to off. Everything else leave alone. Click Sys Write and you are done!

If you have done this right then when you open a Midi track in pts and arm the Record then push a note on the fg the level in pts will rise.

This is just how to use the FG as a controller. I am still trying to figure out how to use it as a sound source. If you figure this out let me know. I'm sure with some playing around I'll figure it out.

Hey Justing2007 or anyone else out there listening! First of all, thanks for all that info, it was extremely helpful!

Secondly I use the Fantom G6 and Pro Tools 8 w/ Mbox Mini and I was hoping you might be able to help me with a problem that I've been struggling with for a long time now. I cannot find a way to export the individual tracks I recorded within the Fantom into Pro Tools 8. I have so many songs on the Fantom and no more memory left. I want to bring every song in the Fantom over into Pro tools so I can really work with some nice effects and do some more intense mastering. Anyway, I've been trying so many different things. Spending hours only to find myself back at square one. I tried saving the songs to a memory stick and putting them in the Macbook but I couldn't find a way to convert the SVQ or SVA files once on my computer. I tried connecting the fantom to my computer via MIDI to USB. I was able to trigger the sounds in pro tools like this but was unable to hear what I created in the Fantom. I am so stuck right now so any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Kevin,

I think what you in order to track out is to resample the track
Dan from roland had a video up on youtube about this a while back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2MC1sjjmAM
I'm at the office so I'm not able to confirm this but hopefully this is what you are looking for.

what kevinlns (1) is trying to say is how do you setup the fantom as a slave to protools so he can transfer each audio track one at a time so he can mix each sound with plug like waves and nomad, Ive been trying to figure this out for a long time and the only answers i get apply for mbox 2 and not mbox 2 mini if anyone can please answer this because im starting to give up on pro tools 8
all i need is the proper way to set this up in protools 8 and roland fantom x6 HELP!!

MIc, I don't know what I was thinking when I post that befor. There is another vid by Dan Krisher were he sets up the fantom with ableton live. It is the same concept to slave the fantom with protools. I myself have mbox2 and use midi cables but I'm sure you can use a usb cord from your fantom to your computer and of course the mbox mini usb to computer. Hopefully that helped you.if not let me know
