been a musician all me life - ran a backing track business using the XP80 with modules and a Boss drum machine for ten years and played in bands - I've had a "break" for a couple of years but am now ready to come out of retirement (44), using G7 and XP80 am forming a tribute band (Phil Collins), might need a second keyboard player for brass and a bit of guitar, but am looking for other musos to join also (guitar, bass, drums, percussion) and of course am auditioning some Phil Collins look-a-likeees

I'm originally from cardiff

It's the backing track business you mention that seems to be ringing a bell with me.. pretty sure I know you. Do you know lisa (or liza) starlight by any chance?

p.s. I thought Lawrence from Musicland had the Phil Collins circuit sown up ;)

Nope, Lawrence retired from that 4 years ago, and that was a solo project anyway, I'm planning a band 6-7 piece for smaller gigs and the full 14 piece if i can get the venues! There is tell that lawrence is coming out of "retirement" with his 1st gig shortly, although I may have inspired him as I asked him if he'd like to get involved about a month ago and he was adamant he didn't want to get back into those sorts of gigs. And Liza is currently my fiance!

(in the voice of Alan Partritge) Aha !!... very small world..

Last I heard off Lawrence he was playing with my old guitarist Danny who used to work the guitar shop upstairs in Musicland, his daughter was playing drums also if I remember right. This was a few years ago now tho after his "Buster" days.

Did some backing tracks for Liza a long time ago. I remember you doing all the tracks around for the solo acts tho.. What was your company called again, Midas or something?

edit : Thought I better add something "G" related. I've used this board non stop for 2 years now and know most of what you will use it for and shortcuts, if you need any help give me a ring and I'll help you out. As for the second keyboard player have you thought about using a click instead for that part or do you want the drummer completely free and keep it live?

Hi, I'm toying with the idea of putting the brass parts on the keyboard and using a click track (I want them to sound as real as possible), but I would much prefer to have everything live! (with the 14 piece set up the brass will be live players) I've only had the G7 since last saturday, so I got some button pushing and study to do, but I'm sure this forum and your offer of help will be brill. I struck lucky with a used one that was factory fresh in a box (never ever been opened) thought the lady who was selling it was having me on - but she's had it 17 months in a box (it's a crime I'm sure) and opened the seals on the box when I got there - I had to go to newcastle to get it though - but got it for £1500 rather than the "new" price, plus the rumours of the demise of this model - seems like I've made a wise choice - yes I ran my tracks company under the names of "Metronomix" 1st then "Andy's Tracks"

I do a little website design these days - this is Liza's site

Metronomix, that was it. Still got a disk in the cupboard somewhere.. ;)

If you want to get the brass as real as possible off click I wouldn't advise using the inbuilt sounds, they are ok for live use but not great. I would advise making multisamples from something like the East West Libraries or similar.. They sound great ;)

You need to get some ram installed also Andy. You can get upto 1 gig but they are about 100 quid. I have a link for a 512 meg stick for 12 quid. I have split the set up into 2 projects for stage work and load 512 meg per half.

Nothing stopping you making the whole backing on PC using East West etc and then saving the whole backing section as audio sample.Load that sampe into your song and align it to click and you get the best of both worlds.

Thanks very much for the advice - I've read and was told about the ram and will sort that out soon - but if you'd like to give me that link you have, that would be appreciated. As I've said I'm not sure just yet how many members of the band I will be getting involved and am still advertising for them as well. The most important member will be the front man - he needs to defo sound like him and look like him. Once I've sorted that out things can move forward. I am just getting to grips with this new G7 and also learning the main keyboard parts to start - but after talking to two keys players now, the suggestion of sampling the brass bits into the audio recorder and using a click for the drummer sounds a good one - I've been a live keyboard player most of my days though (except when sequencing in the studio) - it always sounds better when everything is fully live! Once I've assembled the band and lead singer, these things can be discussed and sorted then!

This is the one I bought and use Andy,

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/SDR/SD...

It will give you aprox 1 hour of sampling in stereo and 2 hours in mono.. Don't bother with stereo for the live work, the audience at the front only get certain parts if hard panned.
