motif xs rack with fantom g6
hi guys just in need of alittle help. ive recieved my motif xs rack today and its great. one downer. i havent got a clue what ive done. my plan is to connect the motif rack to the external mixer in the fantom g6 and that is what i have done. but one problem. as i play channel one in the external mixer with a motif sound it plays the instrument in channel one of the internal mixer. ive got around this by turning the channel one internal mixer down but i would like to no if its possible to have 32 channels running. 16 internal and 16 external. another thing i really need help with is setting my fantom g6 up with cubase. im really no good with all this and if someone could just tell me step by step what i have to do ill be rally greatfull. For those who wish to help i have installed bolth the drivers off the fantom g6 and the motif rack so its just help within cubase i need. thanks guys and i really hope you can help as i am really new to all this. havent even done one song yet on cubase lol.

You are correct, Apex is the best help you can get. He has been helping me a lot. I have the Motif rack and with Apex, it works like a champ with the G.

Re: motif xs rack with fantom g6
what exactly do you mean joe?
I'll give these pointers immediately to see how far they get you.
If you want to single sounds from the motif rack xs go into single mode on the FG and then go to external. then you want to use the program change parameters (you can see the xs rack data list manual to get more help on this..., but I will tell you this to get you started, MSB = 63, LSB = 0 this will allow you to access the preset bank #1 sounds)... if you need more help with this let me know. It took me quite a while to get the hang of it too.)
EITHER WAY, THIS IS HOW YOU OPERATE THE RACK XS FROM THE FG IN SINGLE MODE/VOICE MODE
1 SOUND ONLY
get this far and then we'll move on.

Exactly how I did it according to Apex!
Re: motif xs rack with fantom g6
Big Joe... did you ever figure out what you were doing wrong? in your original post... I've got a similar issue happening where it is triggering sounds from the external midi channel 1, as well as the internal midi channel 1.
what did you do to fix it?

Re: motif xs rack with fantom g6
Have you made sure that the tiny "Phrase" icon on the left of the sequencer screen is set to "Ext"on the tracks you want only the rack to play? This disengages the internal sounds and is saved when you save the song, and if you want to trigger the midi set-up data (Programme Change, Volume etc) remember to switch on the keyboard switches in Part View.
Re: motif xs rack with fantom g6
wow. sex. that looks to have solved the issue. i've been trying to get this figured out for three days. now.
one more thing, does this still allow me to be able to modify the channel that is triggering the phrase (in the phrase edit menu).... does it just tell the keyboard to use (internal midi channel 1, 2, 3 etc... or external midi channel 1, 2, 3 etc...)
thanks again. you've solved it for me!!!!

Re: motif xs rack with fantom g6
I'm going to post this in multiple places in this forum because there is more than one instance where the information is needed... so sorry in advance for the double post.
OK. guys this is what I've figured out. I am just simply trying to record the midi data that the Rack XS is sending when I trigger an ARP to play. When I record the Midi Data that the Motif Rack XS is sending out for some reason it is recording the data to the INTERNAL, EXP 1, EXP2, & EXTERNAL Midi Channel/part 2.
I am not sure why it is doing this, but I figured out that it like this. After I recorded the midi the Arp Midi Data I went into the microscope and sure enough it says that the midi data was recorded on INT, EXP1, EXP2, and External... so that is the reason that it kept on playing the midi channel 2 (internal) when I just wanted it to play the midi channel 2 (external)... I guess if I had an expansion 1 or 2 ARX card it would be triggering midi channel 2 on that as well.
I'm trying to figure out what's causing it to trigger all the mixers(int, exp1, exp2, ext)...
(i'm not telling it too)... And I'd rather not have to go in everytime and change the channel when I record... (selected all sources/part group, and telling it to just play it on External midi channel 2 or Internal midi channel 4)...
does anyone know how to tell the Fantom which mixer to record the data too? does that have something to with the OUTPUT Destination? surely not... since we the problem is not at the output stage, but at the input stage? it's actually being recorded to every place where there is a midi channel 2 reference in the Fantom G.
So when I record the Arp Data from the Rack XS, and it is outputting the data on channel 2 it shouldn't send the information to all the mixers (int, exp1, exp2, ext...) it should only send it to the one that I am triggering it from. that's the reason for selecting the track...right?

Re: motif xs rack with fantom g6
Hi Apex
In my experience phrases are independent capsules of midi data which can be used in as many songs as you want, but if you edit that phrase it will appear in it's new version in every instance where you've used it. That also means that if you are triggering an external sound unit the edits will be recognised by the unit including channel number edits. I have never used the G with an external triggering device so I can't help you there.

HERE IS A DIRECT POST FROM DAN KRISHER (FROM ANOTHER THREAD) FROM A LONG TIME AGO.
BUT I BELIEVE IT DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THE ISSUE I'M DESCRIBING.

Hi.
OK, this a quick response to your question as I'm not at my system at the moment. Firstly, when you sequenced your Mopho parts, did you set the Part Mode to External and the Part mode to the respected MIDI channel in the Mopho? Check the phrases that contain the Mopho in the Microscope. If they were sequenced correctly, they should only be referenced as an external part...
Also, there is not a way to record audio and sequence MIDI at the same time, presently, though we have had requests for this and have forwarded them to our engineers for examination.

END QUOTE
See the problem that I was running into is that when I went into the microscope the parts that contained the midi data from the external instrument (rack xs) were referenced as an internal, external, exp1, exp2 part.... I need to figure out how to make it ONLY reference the one part it's being triggered from (external midi channel 2...ect.)

Re: motif xs rack with fantom g6
I just got off the phone with Product Support from Roland US
The answer to this question/issue is you can't seperate them. The Fantom G (just like any other device) can't distinguish what "part"/"mixer" to associate the date with. So it just associates it will all midi channels (that its being transmitted on)- internal midi channel, expansion 1 midi channel, expansion 2 midi channel, and external midi channel.
That is why it would trigger sounds from all those other parts. The only way around it is to mute those parts while the midi data is being transmitted into the Fantom G.
Case Closed. Thanks Eric from Product Support (Roland US)
