keep rhythm pattern going after switching patches

If one triggers a rhythm pattern from the pads and switches to the next patch (one live mode user patch to another) is there a means of keeping the pattern playing after the patch is switched (assuming the same rhythm pattern set is associated with both patches etc). I'd swear I was previously able to do this, but now when the patch is changed the rhythm pattern stops. I'm not sure if it's a setting that's been changed or what.
