Is there a way of linking a laptop upto my fantom g6 and the

Post by bradbury1981 »

I would like to know how to link a laptop up to my fantom g in order to play the fab four vst instruments. I would also like to use the vst instruments in live performances. How can i get the laptop which will be linked to my fantom g to play through a PA system. Can you please advise of the leads and other parts i will need in order to get this working.

Thanks,

all you have to do it connect your laptop as you normally would (to the computer, through midi, etc...whatever you use to connect it to your laptop to control the VSTs)

then you would just use some type of audio cable (1/8 inch stereo to a set of stereo RCAs (or something similar) to connect the sound output from the laptop to the PA system.

Should be good as golden from there.

Do you use a seperate audio interface or do you use the Fantom-G? What I do when I use my Fantom-G along with a laptop in live situations, is use the Fantom-G as an audio/MIDI interface and USB MIDI controller at the same time. All you need for this is a single USB cable (to connect the Fantom-G with your computer) and a pair of 1/4" audio cables (to connect your Fantom-G to the PA system).

I do just this and I can control my VST instruments, along with Fantom-G's internal sounds.

No, I don't think so. My post was better! LOL! :-D

No seriously, what I just said was that you can use a single USB cable to send MIDI data from the Fantom-G to the laptop, and send audio digitally from the laptop to the Fantom-G. Then send all audio from the Fantom-G to the PA system.

I wouldn't use the laptop's audio outputs to route the VSTs directly to the PA, because this means that you'll use the internal soundcard, This isn't that good, because most laptop internal soundcards don't provide the essential ASIO drivers, so you won't have very good performance (latency etc).

Yes you can easily use your laptop as a VST host with your Fantom as the controller. Unlike some instruments with USB ports, the Fantom's USB port operates not only as a midi port, but also allows the instrument to function like a USB sound card for your laptop. The result is that you won't need to directly hook your laptop to the PA, the sounds from your laptop will be coming out of the Fantom along with it's own internal sounds. I'm looking to add the Alesis DM10 drumset to our setup, and wish it had the same capability, it's usb port is for midi only.

woah... are you serious?

I mean I knew everything you said, except for the part about not having to connect the laptops output to the PA... but you could still connect the FGs outputs to a PA or amp or whatever and still get the sound from the laptop. That's too crazy!!!!!!

FG for the WIN!!!!!

Yes, that's exactly how the Fantom-G works. Since it functions as a USB audio interface, the computer's sound will use the Fantom-G's inputs and outputs. That's why you don't need the internal laptop's soundcard in the equation. Therefore, the only cable that needs to be hooked from the Fantom-G to the computer is a single USB cable. It carries both MIDI and digital audio signal, and bidirectional. Both machines send and receive MIDI and audio data to each other, with a single USB cable.

Another hint: You can assign a knob to adjust the computer's overall volume seperately from the Fantom-G's sounds. Just hold "SHIFT" and turn the knob you want, a menu will pop-up and in this menu you can choose "USB/Digital volume". In a live situation this is very handy, because there is not a separate knob for the input, so this is a workaround. Too bad we can't do the same with the analog inputs. We're stuck with the back panel's tiny knob.

I am looking to link my fantom g up to a laptop and PA system tonight. I have cubase vst & want to use the FAB four vst plugin. In order to save time working out how to get the VST instruments to play in cubase via the Fantom G. Can anyone please provide a short tutorial on how to configure cubase with a FAB four plugin and how to set up the Fantom G to play the VST instruments. Any help would be really helpful.

Thank you.
