Fantom G for me

Post by Gstring »

I am about to get a fantom G8 as I want to concentrate and learning to play better and the keyboard is by far the best action out of any of the big 3 companies.

Have been reading some of the posts on this forum and I have to say that there is a lot of negativity. On Youtube and in all reviews I have seen people love it. I really liked it also and will get it either way.

Can somebody answer the following for me before I clear out my savings:
1. Can you record automation of effects etc on an audio track?
2. I don't like the pads on the G. Can I hook up an MPD and use the pads to trigger the sampler?
3. When triggering samples with the pads would it record this on the MIDI track and if I had a load of samples recorded could I just use one track out of the 16 parts available?
4. The shop I tried it in had no mouse attached. Can you move and add notes in the piano roll editor with a mouse? (I think it is called microscope if my memory serves me correct).

As I have been scouring the web for links of the G, M3 and XS I have found a few nice ones that some of you might enjoy.

How can you hate the pads ? It might be because you haven't got a G yet, the pads are so versitile and touch sensitive, you'll understand when you get yours, I bet your looking well forward to it!!! It is the best you can get!!! good luck to you and enjoy your new keyboard

Video 1 makes me think that those who say "Fantom G piano's suck" have never played or listened to them before!

I don't think you've ever owned anything with pads or with pads that were any good before..

The G8's truly are awfull.. Unless you set a constant velocity it is pure luck if you get what your aiming for.. and this even applies for just selecting favourites.

The pads feel like buttons to me. I have an MPD and it is much more sensitive. It must be possible to use through midi. I might be getting an MV 8800 to partner the G so it might not be a big issue. Lots of second hand bargains because of the recession etc.

Can somebody please answer my questions above. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

1.Can you record automation of effects etc on an audio track?

NO, unless you can set up a midi controller - But I dont think you can.

2. I don't like the pads on the G. Can I hook up an MPD and use the pads to trigger the sampler?

YES, pretty sure you can

3. When triggering samples with the pads would it record this on the MIDI track and if I had a load of samples recorded could I just use one track out of the 16 parts available?

YES

4. The shop I tried it in had no mouse attached. Can you move and add notes in the piano roll editor with a mouse? (I think it is called microscope if my memory serves me correct).

NO - you can only click on the functions and then enter the position with the data wheel or inc dec buttons. no click and drag Im afraid. The mouse is only an aid to navigating the screen really.

You CAN record FX automation on a MIDI track !

- Go to song, choose a MIDI track and position the cursor at which point you wish to record,
- Select the part to which patch with the FX to tweak has been assigned (either in the studio page, or using the part select pad function),
- Hit the Routing button or go to Patch Edit, then go to PFX (F2),
- Press record,
- When recording use either the knobs or use the dial to tweak the parameters you wish to automate.

And voila, you're done. And the beauty of pattern sequencing is that you have your automation recorded on an independent phrase, so you may use this automation on other phrases. The automation phrases may appear empty in the phrase edit page, but it is in fact full of SysEx events as the microscope will show. You can verify that the automation is actually working by looking at the PFX panel while you play the song : you will stare at the parameters' pots moving by themselves ;)

And yes, the pads are awful, you have to disable pad velocity in the system menu to effectively use them. I only use the pads for part select/mute, tone select/sw and numeric input. But since I have another synth on top of the FG, it is not possible for me to beat them, anyway :)

He never asked if you could record automation on midi.. he asked if you could record automation effects on audio.

My bad. Btw, if you need automation for audio, you can make a sample set, assign that set to a sample set part (9 by default) and you'll be able to record full automation. At the expanse of one part, I admit.
