Sudden white noise

Post by Wilhelm »

I have a problem with my G7. It happened about 4 times during rehearsals that a sudden very loud distorted white noise came out of the machine. It happend while playing, not with sound changes or anything special. All I could do was to shut it off and restart. After that it played ok. Seems to be a random problem - and it happend 4 times since I have the G7 (about 6 month). I fear it happens live on stage. Did anyone observe this behavior? Any hints what I can do?

Some other Fantom G owners have experienced this problem i.e. a loud distorted noise. One person sent his Fantom G to a Roland service center and Roland gave him a new Fantom G in return. It seems to be an intermittent problem and I'm not sure what causes it either. Roland knows what causes it no doubt, but they haven't discussed this architectural "flaw" with us here at RC that I'm aware of. Since you've experienced this anomaly several times already with your Fantom G my advice would be to ship it back to Roland and hope they send you a new one. :) If they decide to fix yours that is okay too of course, just so long as they fix it right. ;)

If you happened to have just recently purchased your Fantom G (less than 30 days ago) you could, theoretically, just return it for a refund or exchange it for a different one from the place you bought it from. If you've had it longer than 30 days (or whatever the store return policy happens to be), then unfortunately you'll have to send it in to Roland and let them take care of it. Unless you purchased an extended warranty from the place where you purchased it. Then you would go through the store where you purchased the extended warranty from e.g. Guitar Center, etc. Be aware, if you send it in to Roland you may be without your Axe for several weeks. :| Hopefully you have a backup keyboard during the interim if you do indeed decide to send it in. Let us know the results and how you make out. :)

yes, my first G8 had that problem. it was from an earlier lot
number (i think pre-July 2008 build). my store ordered me
a fresh one from what appears to be a november lot number
and things have been great.

there is really no user servicable cure, it appears to be
a hardware problem. i tried everything that i could think of
such as getting a new UPS, running high-end balanced and
unbalanced lines, checking the spacing on the damper pedal
adapter if it was causing any shorts, etc. nothing cured it.

When i used to own a fantom x6 i pruchased mine in april 2004. One of the first in western canada it had the random noise between patch changes. This was addressed later on with motherboard revisions. (Crappy DAC's where the problem.) All new Fantom X's don't exibit this problem. When i purchased the X8 it already had the latest revision.

Hi there

I've experienced the same problem too yesterday. Unfortunately, switching my unit off and on again has not rectified the problem and as a result it's unusable.

The good news is Roland are collecting it from my house. Lets hope it's good news (purchased September), will keep you posted

Roland have just called me today and say they have just replaced the motherboard too.

It's not been a fun week though, is it wrong to be so attached to something that shares the same name as that gifted actor from 'Grange Hill'. Come back RoW-lAnd! (I apologise to anyone who can't get that voice out of their head)

Don't know whether this thread is still live but I've just bought a used G8 - only 6mths old and still in the box. it has the same problem and I am in the process of trying to convince Roland NZ that its a recognised hardware issue and its their problem not mine. Played a gig last night and it did it three times!! had the mixer with his finger hovering over the keys channel mute button!!! how did you get on - what did Roland say?

Welcome to the RC Fantom G Forum Glenn. :) Yes, this is a known issue with the Fantom G and I advise you to get a hold of your nearest Roland repair shop and send your G8 in to have it fixed. You might have to ship it to Australia if there are no Roland repair shops in New Zealand but I would guess there are several in New Zealand too. You bought the G8 second hand, but since the G8 is under one year old from the "original" date of purchase?? the warranty should be transferable and hence still in effect. Sorry to hear your G8 is one of the few that has exhibited this particular problem but again Roland should repair it free of charge with the shipping included too by the way. You should call Roland to get an RMA (Return to Manufacturer Authorization) number from them first though in my opinion. Let us know if you get it resolved okay. :)

I hope you don't mind being without your main Axe for several weeks though Glenn. ;) Roland can sometimes get backlogged with work and it could take quite a while to get your G8 back from them. A nice Christmas present around the end of December perhaps. :( Hopefully it won't be that long.... ;)

Thank you so much for your reply. I figured that it was a hardware issue and this will assist with having it dealt to in NZ. Can be repaired here. Its a wicked instrument and I can't wait to have it working in a bullet proof fashion!
