Rhythm Sets: It can't be this hard, What am I doing wrong?!

Post by mission »

So disclaimer: I've been an MPC user for four years. Ive watched every Dan Krisher video on Youtube, I've scoured the manual, this forum, google... I'm also not the brightest/most sober guy around. I just know how to jam. So please be kind, I'm one of those silent guys who has read 38 pages deep on the forum.

Anyway!

I had to trade my MPC 1000 away to help get this shiny Fantom G6 over here. I love it! My studio has it, I get home and would cry trying to get something exciting out of the Motif... no longer!

I just want to dump a bunch of one shots onto the Fantom, have each one be assigned to a key and be able to rock from there. If there's a way to span one of the samples(1shots) chromatically for rolls and such, that'd be awesome too.

I've tried the multi sample way, I've tried the patch way, I've tried creating a rhythm set with varying degrees of success. Surely I'm doing something wrong! Is it really this hard to do something so simple? I make a lot of drum programs... Every time I think I've done it the patch can never be found in studio mode where I live normally... or I'm just unable to recall it all together...

Can anyone point me to a link/video/explanation to help get my head out of my rear?

I'm all excited about what Im making with this G but my drums are suffering horribly by not having my custom collections.

EDIT - to be more clear.. i used to run an mpc as midi master with motif or fantom as the slave. sequencing drums on mpc and "sounds" on workstation. now all i have is a workstation (for now at least)

I have done exactly what you describe. I dumped my MPC1000 to get the Fantom G and imported my custom collection of "single shots" into the G and set up 10 or so of my own "signature kits" I have been using for years.

I could and should make a video of this as I believe it would help many. I will try to find time to show you how I did it, but unfortunately I am quite busy with work at the moment... hang on a few days, ok!!

Also If someone who needs help is a hip hop millionare, please put a wad of money on my paypal account and I promise to make videos faster. :)

Thanks for the reply and the potential of a future video but my question is this ... why is a video needed? The main function of any sampler is to be able to batch import and span across keyboard/pads... even one of the least user friendly samplers, the EXS24, makes this easy and automatic.

I know the FG is not a sampler per se, it's much more ... but really... this is insane. If the kicks on the FG were any good this wouldn't be a problem. But they aren't for commercial rap/rnb and that can't be argued.

mission.... who told you Fantom-G was designed to be user friendly?

Fantom-X is a different story. You can check the samples you want to include in a kit... then press utility button.. and select create rythm kit....

once you have create a kit... them you are in a rythm sound programming paradise man....

Each note has up to four stereo samples, layered if you want, with random or alternate pan, filter, effects sends... etc... all accessible while the sequencer is running, so you can make changes on the fly to see how it sits with rest of the track......

just hang in there... Rythm kit editing is one of Fantoms' highlights...

ok so you're saying it's pretty powerful but i just have to figure it out a bit more and then im all good? or that the X is really easy but G is not?

the 4 voice thing is very similar to the MPC so i get that concept...

what ive been doing is going into single mode and trying to create the set per videos on you tube but i cant seem to be able to access them in studio mode.

lets say i have 20 drum hits. i just want to use one of those nifty little "user" banks and have my own that i can access up there anytime. seems pretty straightforward!!

anyone wanna hit/help me on aim/ichat ("thetonymission"), i have some sounds to share :)

thanks!

mission...

Both Fantom-X and Fantom-G have the same features for rythm-kits..

Here is the cool part.. you don't even have to create a user kit......

do this...

In Song mode, select a kit that you like most.... now.. let's say you want to switch the kick with the sample you have loaded...

Press Patch/Edit button
then Pro Edit
then press the key where you want to put your sample...
Go to Tone - Wave
from the wave, select your own sample from the list...

Why it's good to do like this? Because you have a pre-made kit (mute groups set up... levels, pan.. reverbs.. all set) for you, you just have to switch the samples with your own... so it gives you more complete options. I mean adding 20 of your samples, and then adding 60 present samples.. vs... getting 80 preset samples, and then switching 20 samples... it's quicker.. unless you have 128 samples.. and want to create a default kit.. with no mute groups set.. etc.

once you have made your own kit.. Press the Write button... and save to the user bank....

Here is the cool part... let's say on this kit you needed reverb on snare to be 50... but in the next song you need only 20... you don't need to save a new kit for the song... just edit the kit and save the customized version of your kit with that song.... The song file saves everything.

Try this.. and let's know which step you can't get through..

Thank you so much! I got it real easy now... I don't mind editing existing sets and while I'd still prefer to dump a folder of hits automatically across the keyboard as one-shots, this definitely lets me get a good kit together that will last me awhile. I don't use a lot of different kicks and snares -- only my signature ones. ;)

Shakil, big help man, thanks... apologize for my density. I was clicking that greyed out area below trying to change the sample and not above... had to hit enter too... not super obvious but something I should have figured out.

Quick question -- do I manually have to adjust the Pitches on these one shots? Anyway to disable that?
