Phrase Recording Mixdown
Phrase Recording Mixdown
Is there a way to take multiple phrases and mix them into a single phrase? I'm not talking about a sample mixdown, just a mixdown of the various parts.
For example, I have a drum phrase and a harmonic chord progression phrase that I would like to make into a single phrase for RTS use, and I don't want to have to strike a bunch of pads to get them all to run at the same time.
Thx for any ideas!

No, sadly this is not possible. This very logical and very basic sequencer behavious has not been implemented.
Same with splitting 1 phrase into multiples (time and/or tone wise).
I can predict a certain response so I will warn you in advance: Don't beleive the gospel of 1 phrase for 1 song. It's rediculous. 128 tracks have to be used for something!
Maybe NAMM will bring more light...

Do you mean "glue"? Like in the standard scissors, glue and eraser function that is found in all sequencers made since 1940?
No, unfortunately the Fantom G does not have that.

I REALLY need merge and extract! I was just wonering, could you run a midi cable out of he G and back in,.. Play your 2 tracks and have the record into a 3rd. You would have to have that 3rd track's midi output turned off. Just a thought, and a LONG way around a simple but needed function!

Yes, the lack of many common sequencer functions, such as merge and extract, is very annoying to say the least. Even if the guys at Roland decide at last to add these features with an upcoming OS update, this is unacceptable for a flagship keyboard workstation at this price range.

Is what you want to do as per the Live Preset 010 "RPS TEMP 98bpm" - Where you have 16 Multitrack phrases ?
I have only had my G8 a couple of weeks and am struggling like you.
The only way I have found to do this is to create mini songs and mixdown to SMF0 midi files, save them and then ( making sure that you set up a Live set with the same combination of tracks as your original "mini song") assign the (SMF)phrase to the required RPS Pad.
I am very disappointed with a lot of things about the G8 you don't get to check out in the shop!
WHY oh why isn't the tempo saved with the Live set data?
WHY do you have to save the Studio setup separately from the Song?
The term "Phrase" is confusing. Sometimes it means "single midi track" in the song - On other occasions, it seems, Multitrack Sections of songs - like the Demo phrases (RPS).
I assumed you would create your phrase in song mode and then by saving it have a complete mixed down "phrase" ready to assign to an RPS pad
Perhaps I have misread the manual - any help gratefully received.

This is really crap. Even my old trusty 14-year old XP50 saves tempo data with each and every patch and performance. Why on earth doesn't this happen with a 2008 flagship synth, I can't really get it.WHY oh why isn't the tempo saved with the Live set data?
Actually this is good for me. You can have seperate Studio sets for each of your songs, make mixer settings etc, and be able to switch entire Studio sets during a song.WHY do you have to save the Studio setup separately from the Song?
Re: Phrase Recording Mixdown
Okay, so I will need to do phrase mix-downs in a DAW, kinda defeats the purpose of having all of the tracks in the built-in sequencer.
It would be nice if I could record the sections of my song using the RTS and be able to jump between sections dynamically. My hope for RTS was to be able to record my parts independently so I could do a mixdown later of each song section.
I also am a bit annoyed that tempo's aren't saved with Live sets. Oh, that would be GREAT! The Juno-G I had before this instrument would do that, and it was a real time saver!

I bought the G for the all in one workstation concept with the 128 track midi sequencer as well as for the sound of course
I also bought an MV 8800 to be able to sequence freely and switch tracks without stopping recording. The 8800 is an 8800 times better machine for basic sequencing; a total no-brainer.
The G's sequencer is underpowered, overcomplicated and totally lacking at this point.
Again, I'm not comparing a workstation to a "production-tool" like the MV8800, just the bare-to-the-bone basic midi sequencing features.
It's almost seems like Roland internally doesn't allow the MV guys to talk to the G guys or any other roland gear group and even deny each oher existance and even on this forum it's blasphemy to compare one roland product with another because it has a different purpose so to say. Well, no: the purpose is to make music and lots of older Roland gear can do that a LOT better and with fewer headaches than the newest G-ear.
G stands for: brilliant concept, poor execution.

Re: Phrase Recording Mixdown
I own an Fantom-X and envy you the phrase sequencer of the G. I think as widely dicussed not everything is finished at the moment. Nevertheless there is no workstation with a better sequencer.
The G has a new software and hardware platform. This takes time to develop.
I think there will be a replacement for the MV-8800 in 2010 having the sequencer from the G.
Wait a while and the missing things will be added.

God I hope not. I hope 2010 will have a replacement for the G with the sequencer of the MV.
