I was a bit "scared off" by the demos too, but i'm sure many sounds are better than this..

Motif is no no for me... i've tried it several times, but i can't seem to like it so far :)
the interface, soundsets, and the keys did not blew me away...

_____________

another question would now be:

PC3X vs K2600XS?

Which is the best synth?
I get it for the same price..
whats included with the k2600XS:
ROM3 & ROM4, 128MB sampleram, 2GB harddisk, large samplelibary. It is studio used only.

I don't think our advices should make you buy smth. They could make you try it out, as you said. 'Cause tastes and needs are personal.

If you need sampling, get the K2600XS

If you need powerful synthesis get the PC3X. The PC3X uses completely new chips and is already far ahead of the K2xxx series. V.A.S.T. in my opinion rivals the overblown 8,000 USD OASYS. In fact for the price of ONE OASYS, you could get a K2600XS AND a PC3X and still have change for smokes or petrol!

hehe :)
would have been cool to own the V synth, but i don't think it's totally my kind of synth :)

And i want 88-keys weighted...

I think my new lineup MAYBE will be like this:

Kurzweil PC3X
Fantom X7 (if i don't sell it... )
Korg Triton LE
Roland JP 8000
Roland AX-7

Tidy: Man I LOVES my JP-8000!! Would never part with it!!! Love my X8 too. Love ALL my boards!!

Diametro: Dude, what is the DEAL with having MCCAIN on your V-Synth???? That could seriously mess up your OS!! Put him on a Casio!!!

Obama sucks so much that placing him on fantom G would be much more appropriate...

Oh, I also love my JP-8000. I will never stop using it / them.

I am going to buy one that is in better condition, and then sell the old one, as it is starting to give up on me, but it is because of hard use, not because of bad quality!

I can not think of a better synth than the JP-8000. Everything I need is right there as a knob, button or a slider.

I definitely think Roland should make a JP-9000 that looks almost exactly the same, no 22" colour screens or anything like that, just modernize it with more poly, a 3rd osc, more memoryslots and a nice multi-mode.

Tidy,

That is GREAT!! I am GASing BADLY for the PC3X. I am both jealous AND happy for you!!

Is this your first foray into V.A.S.T.? If it is, be prepared for one of the most powerful synthesis engines ever unleashed.

You are going to have a blast with such esoteric functions as:

ramp(f-a+b)
(a+1)y+b
Sample b On ~a
a |y| + b
warp4(a,b)
b/(1-a)
(a+b)^2
Quantize b to a
|a-b|
a*10^b
MANY MANY more

Plus synthesis architectures including (short list here, you will see a LOT more, this is just a teaser):

Double Shaper
Two-Parameter Shaper
Wrap
+Amp
+Gain
MANY MANY more, AND, you will be able to create your OWN architectures!!

The Kurzweil is also known for its insane variety of filters, its ability to generate its own waveforms, it can do almost all better known architectures such as Additive, Subtractive, FM, AM, etc...

REAL Pulse Width Modulation, etc., ad infinitum.

Now, imagine multisampling your Kurz with your X7 ... oh my GOD the possibilities ARE infinite!!!!

I hope you love to experiment and to program! Don't be intimidated. I remember when I bought my K2000 and saw this HUGE manual that is textually dense with graphs, charts, equations, etc., I freaked out for a bit. But, once you get into the belly of the synthesis beast that is Kurzweil, you will never look back :)

I am truly happy for you!

Vlad

I'm glad to hear that!

it was actually you that pulled me into that kurzweil scene, and made me discover the greatness of this synthesizer!

This is my first foray into V.A.S.T yes!

about the esoteric functions... I have almost NO clue what you were talking about there, but I will probably understand it in a while ;)

After the samples i've heard and the specifications of the synthesis methods and shaping I have GREAT expectations to this beast!

On the "sad" side... shortly after my previous writings in this post, I actually sold my Fantom X7. I got a call from a guy that wanted to buy it, and I accepted.
So now i have a problem. i will grand about 11.000 NOK for the synth, but will probably have to buy myself a new one...
And then again.. do i want the G8, or is that just nonsense to put another 10.000 NOK on the table to buy that one... hmm

I also got a call afterwards from the guy who getting the PC3X for me about a Defect Clavia Nord Electro 2 73key version that he may could fix and sell for a laugh-able price... I think i may buy that one, but...

I'm not safe with the Kurzweil alone on a gig.. Yet.
and I have som closecoming gigs at the moment.. This might be a bit painfull :)

Any suggestions?

What would be a Perfect Work mate for the Kurz? ;)

Tidy,

If you need sampling - I am unfamiliar with the Tritons believe it or not - then you could still get the X6 as a partner for your Kurz.

If you are looking however for an additional 88 key instrument, I suppose you could get a G8. Lots of people here love the G and I understand that even the somewhat negative reviews of this workstation always mention that Live Mode is fantastic. You might want to ask G owners like MadaHorn and JimKnopf to give you their opinions on the G. They love it and own it and so their opinions would be based upon a much longer time with this instrument than I had. I auditioned for a grand total of nine hours in three different shops and was left "cold". But, JimKnopf feels that the G is light years ahead of the X.

Another option would be an X8. You are already familiar with the X engine.

There is of course the Korg M3. Again though, not my cup of tea. When I bought my X8 this past February I auditioned it against the X8. The M3 IS nice, but the X8 just felt and sounded MUCH better for MY needs. As for the OASYS? I think that the price is ridiculous, and money was no object for me. For 4,000 USD, I would have bought it in a heartbeat, but at 8 grand? Unless it makes orange juice for me and gets me a date with Shakira, forget it! :)

The PC3X gives you amazing synthesis possibilities that the G and the X cannot touch. That much is certain in terms of V.A.S.T. vs the Fantom's (powerful) S+S engine.

Kurzweil's plans are to focus continued development on this powerhouse. With the deep pockets of Hyundai backing them, the new Kurzweils could very well reclaim Kurzweil's position as the state of the art that they held with the unveiling of the K2000 back in the day. And believe me, nothing then could touch it terms of synthesis power and flexibility. Legendary artists like Pink Floyd, Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney, Paul Shaffer, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and many more were and are Kurz users.

I remember a Keyboard article featuring Pete Townshend. When asked about his K2000, he said (paraphrase since Pete uses words we can't use here lol): "Get the K2000. It's all in there and you don't need any other f*****g musicians."

I wish could offer more positive comments on the Fantom G, but I am unqualified.

I am also glad that you got to hear the PC3X and see its specs. I would be very saddened if you just took my word for it. I am pleased that I steered you in the direction, and very pleased that you did the research :)

I noticed on your gear list that you too own a JP-8000! Isn't is a GREAT synth?? Yes, there are "better" VAs now - in fact your new Kurz has the built in VA-1 engine - but there is a character about the JP-8000 that makes it one of the coolest VAs I have ever played. I will NEVER part with mine. I hope that you never part with yours!!

Best,
Vlad

Note: I am not connected with Kurzweil Music Systems at all. I just know Kurzweil products and their great history. I bought my K2000 new when it was first released and still today it is a VERY important part of my rig, and an instrument capable of astounding possibilities.
