Interesting

Post by Matias »

Besides what everyone told here, there are 2 other interesting things:

- Control Pedal Jack, (assignable) x 2: Fantom-X had 1, right? (I'm a Juno-G user). 2 is a big deal, one can use as Live Setting Up and the other for enabeling effects, for example. Great.

- USB audio: will work as a sound card for recording in a DAW. Cool!

Well, here is the answer that I got from V-CeeOh (forum Moderator):

No. I don't believe that will be possible. The interface looks very similar to the one in the SonicCell. If that's the case you actually only can use 1 input, stereo or mono, at the same. The same happens with the Fantom-X - You have to choose wich input you'll use. So I believe you'll be able to record only one audio track at a time.

Still, that's the kind of feature that we only can be sure about when the Manual is available.

And my reply:

Wow, that would actually be VERY sad for me. I really didn't expect or need it to do 3-5 tracks, but I REALLY did need, want and expect it to at least record 2 tracks at once. Say a vocal and guitar all at once.

Wow, that could really changes things for me. I need at least 2 tracks at once other wise this will not work for me. To much money to spend without at least 2 tracks at once.

*I know and understand that this is meant to be more of a "keyboard" workstation, BUT I was REALLY hoping with those inputs that I could make this work for myself as well. But I would really need it to be able to track both my vocal and guitar at one time, while being able to essentially send each to it's own track. A very basic 2 track type of setup.

This could kill everything for me. I simply am to tight on money to spend what is most likely going to be a couple thousand dollars for something that doesn't at least track 2 at one time.

I KNOW...this is a keyboard and workstation FIRST, and most likely an audio recorder 2nd, 3rd or even 4th, but it really would have made a very cool center piece type of geer for me if it did to 2 tracks at once.

I'll wait and see if V-CeeOh is wrong on this, but I tend to think that his train of thought is correct.

Being a Fantom X owner I would say that you cant record more than one input at a time, the front facia looks very similar on the G to the X in this regard.

One thing I think is a mistake is input level control is now on the back panel....tut tut, should have left it on the front facia.I found this very useful on the X.

I noticed that the memory expansion is PC133 again. Wasn't this the standard for desktop/laptop RAM 5-7 years ago? Does anyone know what effect this has on the speed of sample loads?

Also, is USB flash faster than Compact flash?

What I agree with: the Fantom G should have more polyphony (at least 192-256)

What I hope: that my Coakley Piano samples & Planet F/V samples are compatible with the Fantom G; should I choose to upgrade from my X6 or X8.

None because PC133 DIMM has bandwith of 1GB/s already. Slow load speeds in Fantom-X are due to inefficient filesystem and I/O hardware.

Good morning from the floor of the NAMM show!

First off let me tell you that the Fantom G sounds amazing!

Second, the File Managment has been fixed! It's project based.

It loads faster via USB2.0.

Did I tell you it sounds AMAZING!

I don't have a lot of time and most of the info has been dropped already so
I will check back when I can and answer questions.

We will be posting videos on the Roland US site so please check that through out the day.

Cool, but 128 midi tracks with just 128 voices of poliphony it's a joke, come on. Sure, you don't put 128 midi tracks sounding at the same time, but if you consider that witha piano patch you eat half of the poliphony, well, do you consideration.
I'd have been satisfied, if they gave you an extra Midi out, then you can control 32 external parts in addition to the 16 internal, +2 ARX parts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still excited about the new Fantom. The effects engine is something I've been looking forward to for sometime now, and the 24 audio tracks is intriguing, but I can't imagine what kind of load times that will require.

My main concern is how good is the sequencer. Editing on the piano roll itself?

Hey Jim, Glad to hear about the fantom G . Roland always makes each evolution sound better Im sure the G is no exception . Have fun out there.

The sequencer is the best sequencer ever put in a workstaion.
Especially when you plug in the mouse.

It's very much like any software sequencer Sonar, Logic. etc.

You can set it up however you like to work.

Greeting Jim. Thanks for stopping by and helping all of us out.

Any chance you could help answer the following?

Can I record 2 audio tracks (2 seperate inputs to 2 seperate audio tracks) at one time?

Or will this only allow me to record 1 audio track at a time?

Example: Could I record my vocal via the XLR input to one track, while at the same time recording something else via the stereo inputs to another track?

I really HOPE this bad boy allows me to record at least 2 audio tracks at once and not just say one stereo track or vocal track at a time.

Thanks for any help and/or input!!!
