Ok I'm definitely certifiable!!!!

Post by KPro81 »

After complaining about the SN Eps and replacing them with the SRX-12 board, I soon got board with static nature of the SRX-12 samples. I then spent the next couple of days back in the workshop with the SN Eps and came up with some good results. Ok folks the Wurlitzer EP I don't care about and the SN Dyno Rhodes (with minor tweaking) are actually quite accurate (I don't own a Dyno modified Rhodes, but I have played one). So really I was looking for an old Fender Rhodes early 70's suitcase sound and believe it or not I think I have it! Funny, I had to sit down at Guitar Center and nearly purchase a Yamaha CP5 to realize that. Like one of the moderators here mentioned you can get any Vintage Ep sound that you want, but boy do you have to do your homework. I wish Roland would just issue a voice update for the SN EPs in the GX and give their customers the goods right out the factory like Yamaha. I didn't think it was possible to get the sound I was looking for until I tweaked a Yamaha CP5 the way that I wanted. Now that I have the mechanical aspects of the particular Rhodes sound I was looking for, those preamps and speaker simulations really shine and give me the flexibility to switch up my sound when I want. I still prefer the Old Case and Old speaker combo with the treble turned down -10 to get an even darker sound. Plus I have the touch to light, so it really has an authentic bark when you dig in.

At the end of the day I realize that the grass isn't always greener on the other side and sometimes what you have is all you need. So find a way to make it work!

Nice to hear someone else who is as enthusiastic about the SN EPs as I am! If you tweak them the right way, it's difficult to hear the difference between a recording of a real Rhodes, and the RD-700GX Rhodes. (Try playing along with a recording and listen to the recording and the RD700GX simultaneously through a headphone for example.) I posted my favorite Rhodes settings a while ago on this forum, hope they are of help to others!

although I got SN EP's playable still to my ears yamaha EP's sounds better...
IMO this is the big mistake by Roland to tweak them out of usability in factory presets.

Yeah Delirium I hear ya on that! The SN EPs have a strange attack and release period that you have to tweak out or in to get them to be playable. I agree that out of the factory the Yamaha EP's are better. Like I mentioned earlier, I wish Roland would just update the GX's (ARX-02) factory presets with usable ones so their customers can spend more time playing and not tweaking just to play a gig!

Anyway, times are tough and while I can, I don't need to be dishing out another $2500 or so on a new board just for a playable Rhodes patch, especially when I own the real thing. So for now I'm dealing with my reworked settings and satisfied with a playable Rhodes sound from the GX.

I have seen a lot of discussions about the SN EPs (which I love to participate in too ;-) As most people know, the way the piano is amplified (and possibly equalized and enhanced by effects) on stage or at home is as important to the overall sound as the basic sound.
I am just wondering what kind of amplification and effects forum members are using to make the SN EPs sound as good as possible...?

I'm curious to hear the "70's suitcase sound" from the OP, any way to share the settings (easily)? or provide a mp3 sample?
