Yamaha P120

Post by markferrell »

I have a Yamaha P120 and an XR. I hooked them together the other day and was having trouble getting the XR to play all of the layers in a Performance. I an new at all of this so I was hoping for some help in this area.

Is there a setting in the XR that I need to change? On the P120, it seems like it will only transmit on one MIDI channel at a time. So if I have a piano and strings layered in a Performance it will only play piano or strings, depending upon how the P120 is set for transmitting.

What am I missing here?

Well, all is correct. XR plays parts separately because they are on separate MIDI channels, and your controller can only send on one channel at a time (some have an "omni" channel).

There is an easy solution, though: just go to performance edit mode, MIDI screen, and set the parts you want to sound together to the same MIDI channel. Then set your controller to that channel and play away ;-)

Thank you for the quick reply. I would imagine the P120 is limited in its MIDI functionality so doing keyboard splits would be out of the question?

No, why, all depends on the XR now. Act the same way, set two parts to the same channel and specify key ranges for them.
