Saving pattern fader positions (plz help me!!)

Post by ScroogeMcDuck »

Hi everyone!

I am quite new to the MC-808 and I just can't find a way to save the positions of the faders. I understand how to save a pattern by using the [WRITE] button, but when I load it the faders are just in neutral positions, which means that I lost my adjustments, like e.g. the cutoff, attack etc. How can I keep the positons, so that the motorized faders moves to the right position when I load the pattern? I thaught that when I saved a pattern, I also saved the fader positions.

I can't find an answer in the manual, and I've looked in the faq on this page and it says:
"Effect settings are stored with each pattern. If you have f.e. a delay effect that should stay the same in all patterns of a song make sure that the effect is allways assigned to the same effect unit (EFX1 or EFX2) so that delays are not stopped at the end of the pattern."

But I don't really understand it, and actually I am not sure that it 's describing my problem.

Can anybody help me? That would be the greatest since I am quite a n00b!

Thanks!!

Peace

Hi ScroogeMcDuck,

as far as i remember there are 2 tricks:

1) "WRITE" the pattern before you change to another pattern
2) Fader position are only saved for parts where something has been recorded in the sequencer.

Hope that helps,

Ciao, Dirk.

Thanks a lot for your reply!

I just don't understand.. When you browse the demo patterns, the faders always goes to a position when you select one of these patterns; Which means that the faders were placed in the right position and then saved with the pattern at the time it was created. When I listen to a pattern I've created I move the faders in each part until I like the sound of the drums, synth etc. Then I would like to save both the pattern, and the fader positions in the pattern, so that it sounds the same next time I load it. Isn't that possible? When I record it to the sequencer and then use [WRITE] it only saves the pattern.

PS: Dirk, your faq helped me a lot in learning the MC-808! Best MC-808 faq on the web.

Peace

It's one thing if the faders don't move, it's another thing if a saved pattern's part levels are different.

I don't recall that being a problem. If I set the levels for a part outside a recorded sequence, that change seemed to have stuck.

I have a fuzzy recollection that pattern tracks have a chunk of MIDI events stored before the first note. I only recall this, because a lot of things seemed glitchy to me before I understood that. It would make sense to store the initial control settings in that same place.

If you don't resolve this, email me at michaeljhuman@aol.com, and I will fire up my 808 and try to figure out what your problem may be.

This is what I figured out...

Changing the certain sliders, such as the synthesizer sliders won't change any global params. There are ways to do it, though -

1) Record your change in step edit, or real time edit; This can be a bit tricky for a setting you want to be global

2) For synthesizer changes, such as your mention to me in an email, it's not too hard to make a simple change
* Go to patch mode
* Make sure slider change, say to cut off
* Write the patch NOT to the current location, but instead, select an unused position in the H bank (it will say Initial Patch.) You CAN save to the current location, but that will change that voice permantly (you can reload voices to factory though
* IMPORTANT; If you wrote to H, you will need to save the PATTERN,
because you have changed the patch associated with that track. If you fail to save the pattern, it will reset to the initial patch, and you won't hear the expected change

the patch but... Important Note!! If you want to change the voice for this patch only, save to an unused position in the H bank. IF you save to the current voice, it will change that voice permanatly
* Make SURE you then write the pattern

You are the king!! Thank you so much for telling us how to do it. We never thought about editing in patch mode! Now everything works perfectly well here. I'll always save to the INIT's when I save something, so that I don't overwrite the patches in the MC.

Before we knew how to do it we tried to move the faders to the right position before the first note. That was kina weird and almost impossible! The solution you gave us is very good and works perfectly well.

Again, thank you very much for taking your time to help us (and for reading my mail), now we can continue making our music (we were totally stuck because of this problem)!

Peace!
