I want to be able to sync up these two devices. Is is even possible?
Ideally, I would like Pro Tools to tell the 808 when to start playback, or better yet, line up the playback exactly with the recording function in PT. I would also like Pro Tools to control the tempo across the board.
Has anyone accomplished this, or anything remotely similar?
It would be great to be able to do this. I hope you can help.

Hi Mathew,
i personally have not tried that but i believe that from the midi spec it is not possible for the mc-808 to jump to a concrete position. It can of cause sync to the tempo of the midi time clock master.
imho it is better to export all patterns as midi files and after that importing them in the daw software you are using. From that point you will use the mc-808 only as a sound generator. That gives you the freedom to change all midi events in the daw to a very late point in production and you have no problems with sync....
If you do not want to change midi any more you can also import all the single track as audio to your daw and mix it there on a pure audio basis. You dont need the mc-808 from that point.
Ciao, Dirk.

thanks Dirk,
that opens up a new question though. How do I export patterns as midi files? I've looked through all the manuals trying to find out how to do this - and I got zip. you da man!
muchas gracias,
Matt

Hi Mathew,
you need OS version 1.02 or 1.03. The steps for exporting are described in the documents for the O.S. update. It is also decribed in the mc-808-faq. Look for export of smf files.

Almost there!
okay, I got that part down, kind of tricky, but I got it...
So now the midi file is loaded into my daw. I am trying to use my mc-808 as a sound generator, and can't get it to work. This depends just as much as what I do from the daw side of things as it does from the 808 side. Dirk, I don't know if you can help me with the settings I need to make in my daw (Pro Tools), but at least maybe you can with the system settings on the 808. For instance, should it be set to System > Sequencer > Sync mode > Slave? Am I even on the right track?
In my MIDI setup in Pro Tools, I selected the MC-505 (instead of the 808) and hooked it up to my digi 002. That was the closest thing they had listed. I don't really think it matters, but thought I'd mention it all the same.
Great music will come as a result of this, I swear!
Thank you all!
Matt

Re: How do I sync Pro Tools/digi002 to MC-808?
Hi Mathew,
no sync between daw and mc-808 because all the midi data is now coming directly from the daw.
What to check:
on the mc-808 side:
- make shure that usb mode is set to midi and not to storage. When not set to midi, the mc-808 will not recognize any midi message
on the daw side:
- make sure that the midi messages are routed to the right midi port for the mc-808. I downt know pro tools but in other daws you can select the output port of a midi track.
Hope that helps. When youre through, maybe you post a little example of your music here...

Re: How do I sync Pro Tools/digi002 to MC-808?
I'm giving up for now.
I tried everything. It seems, from my understanding, that I may need what's called a "SYNC Perephrial" device, sold undoubtedly by degidesign, that will serve as the missing link needed to connect my daw to the 808. I also dont think the 808 is compatible with MTC or MMC protocols, which Pro Tools utilizes in its syncronization.
I'm getting one or more Compactflash cards so that I can have more memory to load up my non-mc808 audio files. Then, after I write my material, I will import the audio over to PT and mix it there. Maybe I can at least control the tempo of the 808 with my daw, but that's nott looking too good right now either. I might look into this "SYNC Perephrial" device...
Anyway, thanks again Dirk, sorry it didn't amount to much. At least I know what my limitations are. That's progress.
Still truckin,
Matt
