Hey people, I've been looking around for an answer to this everywhere and hope that maybe someone on here could help me out. I have owned many a groovebox, and am a big fan of the drum sequencing format. On the 505 it's identified as "count 2" in the record menu, but I believe in the 909 and 808 it's "TR" record.
Basically a step sequencer. My simple question is, does the sp-808 have this same feature for mapping out your beats? All i've found online is info about hitting the pads to make a pattern, but can those pads be used to map out accurate patterns with your drums the same way as the pads on the grooveboxes?
I can see that it has 16 pads, just like the grooveboxes, so I would think those bads, although laid out in a square, could still represent all the steps like on the liniar pads in the grooveboxes.
I prefer to actually set the drums out rather than just hitting the pads (it's more accurate)
Thanks in advance for the info.
Can the sp-808 do
Re: Can the sp-808 do
Yes, the SP-808ex has step record - I think ( that's what google said!)
Re: Can the sp-808 do
thanks! But strange, I searched google for this and only found that it can do step recording for the built in synth.... I could never find any mention of it doing step recording for the drums.

I have had the sp 808ex for a while.
The syth has a 70's style step recorder that you can step record effect parameters to as well...sort of like oldskool automation if you like.
As far as tr style recording goes....no you can not.
It does have a step recorder for samples..but you will only be able to step record loops.
The sp808 is NO good for individual hits as it streams from a zip disk that will not keep up and yopu will get buffer errors.
Seq on the 808 is rubbish, really only for about two tracks of phrases before it becomes unstable.
However it has the best effect range andyou can edit them a hell of alot more than any other sp sampler.
If you want to do tr style seq I'd look at a korg electribe although the emx are all pcm and a bit weak compared to the roland sounds. Unless you do them through the synth but then you take up your lead parts.
in summary the 808 is very long in the tooth now but as it has a better screen you can get deep into the effects. Thats why I keep mine.
