Does the Save As function in the File menu of the Editor save the entire settings of the MC-808? Can it therefore be used to restore the unit back to a previous condition?
Any ideas anybody?
I have found that everytime I use a Compact Flash to Backup and Restore the Internal (User) Memory, I seem to be re-importing some error or bug into the sytem, that will not allow me communicate with the editor.
Please see "unable to read/write data" elsewhere in the Groove Zone.
Editor File Menu Save AS
Re: Editor File Menu Save AS
Hi Mallet,
it only stores the patch setting and the effect settings and routings but not the system settings. To keep the system settings press WRITE while in system mode.
Ciao, Dirk.

Backup Problem
Hi Dirk,
I am afraid that I did not fully understand either of those sentences. It is important to me to find a way of safely backing-up and restoring my work.
As I stated in the other post, backing up to CF seems to be inneffective, as it only partially restores my settings, and in a bugged fashion that causes the Editor not to communicate with the PC.
If I do a Save As, is it NOT saving the Songs, Patterns, RPS memories, and Pattern Call memories? These are the items I most need to backup, at this stage of my involvement with the 808.
I also had tried to restore the 808 by replacing some Song, Pattern and RPS files in the Roland folder, while in Storage mode, but the 808 did not change to reflect this. Do you follow me so far?
Lastly, could you please explain "To keep the system settings press WRITE while in system mode" a bit more. I do not get the connection here. Sorry.
I suspect the huge confusion with this unit stems from the appalling manual, which is so piecemeal that it does not give one any real insight as to the architecture and thinking behind the way the unit really works. In a few days, one can usually get the hang of how the designer was thinking when he designed something. Not so with the 808, which feels like it was designed by committee. Inspiring but frustrating.

Re: Editor File Menu Save AS
I am not sure what I can add, that has not already been said.
The backup/restore make sense to me, but I have not actually tried to restore.
The only way I know to backup everything from the MC-808 to another location, is to first use the system backup utility. The you should (in theory) be able to copy what's on the card to a PC. If the card became corrupted, you should (in theory) be able to copy what was on the card back to a good card, and then run a restore (as the system should be backed up onto the card.) Which should then include every patch/pattern sample on the card as well as whatever was in user memory AND the system settings.
If that is not working for you, I don't know what else to tell you. I have backed everything up as described above, but I have never tried a system restore that way; I was able to revert patches though by copying the desired file.

Thanks Michael.
That all makes perfect sense.
However, when I tried to copy a Song file over itself, using the MC808 in Storage mode with the PC, the song did not appear in the song list.
Likewise, when I tried to copy an RPS file over itself (the same location in the RPS Set list), using the MC808 in Storage mode with the PC, the RPS parameters did not appear to change.
I also tried to copy a pattern file over itself (the same location in the Pattern list), using the MC808 in Storage mode with the PC, the Pattern did not change.
Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Editor File Menu Save AS
I realize this is probably obvious, but when you copy to the card, you need to have card not user selected to see patches, patterns and songs.
I might find time to do some experimenting with my own MC-808, but not for a week...I have family coming in for my nephews graduation.

Re: Editor File Menu Save AS
One issue is that one can only store Songs, RPS sets, and Pattern Call sets to the Internal User memory.
Therefore I was trying to replace the various Song, RPS, and Pattern Call sets, by dropping the ones saved as my backup onto the Internal User ones, via the Storage Mode, all performed on the PC.
Alas, the Song and RPS's were not changing
