So..V-synth original or JP8000?

Post by tranztek »

I am looking at getting a synth to add to my Fantom G as a sound design board. and am looking at the original V-synth or a JP8000....as I have no experience of either just wondering the pros and cons of each synth.

JP8000 is a virtual-analog only synth, the one that introduced the supersaw to the world. It has become a legendary synth, and if you can make a good bargain for a used JP8000, I'd say : go for it. But if you need more than VA (sampling, PCM Osc, ...) the V-Synth might be your best choice.

Also remember that JP8000 only offers 8 voices of polyphony. V-Synth will achieve more with non-complex patches.

JP-8000 features only a virtual analog engine. V-Synth has almost the same engine, however, it's a semi-modular design in the architecture, with multi-model COSM processors instead of simple filters. But the most important part is the VariPhrase spectral sample processing which can do magic to any sound, from drum loops to human vocals. Go for the V-Synth, it has at least 10x more sound power than the JP-8000. The V-Synth can also route external audio into it's synth engine, and you can even switch between different processor types using the keyboard zones for some wild realtime processing of external audio.

If you can afford it, go with the V-Synth. It can do probably 90% or more of the JP patches plus about 10,000 more things besides if you want to get into it.

Thanks all - the price difference is about $325 between The JP and the V-Synth mk1, so I could just about go for it.
