Version 2 and MIDI

Post by Kneel »

Hello All

I upgraded my 1.51 version last night to version 2. Though I will miss some of the patches of version 1.5 and the demo song(I kinda liked them) I can deal with it since version 2 is awesome.

Anyway after the upgrade I installed the MIDI drivers which proved to be a little tricky (required at least one reboot) but soon I was able to see my V Synth listed as a MIDI device in device manager etc. So finally I could hook up my synth to FL studio and play some of my songs through my baby.

When I tried to play MIDI out(using a MIDI out channel in FL Studio) I dont get a sound ,however when I do play the vsynth keys both the synth and FL studio produces sound. In a nutshell MIDI IN works MIDI out does not. Anybody have any idea's or help for me ? I even tried playing a MIDI file in Media Player (as per instructions in the manual) and there was no sound either.

Oh yes I did select the V-Synth as the midi device in the mixer and device manager sections of windows.

Thanks

The v-synth's USB MIDI implementation is, at best, flakey. I'd recommend using a regular MIDI cable, to be honest.

When I got my XT, i couldnt figure out why I couldn't get it to make a sound, and soon someone pointed out that USB MIDI doesn't properly send MIDI clock to the XT (so, arpeggiated patches won't play because they need MIDI clock to sync to the sequencer).

Spend $30 on a USB midi interface(if you don't already have a free set of ports) and save yourself any headaches you might get from trying to figure this out :)

yeah seems like we're the majority. Almost makes me wonder why the manual says NOTHING about this.

(Actually, I'm pretty sure the dude who wrote the manual never used the V Synth. Either that or he's semi-retarded.)

Well after thinkering a bit I got the USB midi to work with Logic Audio and basically got most of the basic functionallity up and running via MIDI. I agree that the USB is a bit flakey. I plugged MIDI cables from my JUno D and 303 into the V -synth and it works like a bomb.

Will experiment some more and let you people know what I find.

After sorting out an issue preventing me from installing the vsynth usb driver, I have never had a problem with USB midi on 3 computers. I had doubts about a 1.0 driver, but it works fine. Because you are getting midi in, that's not the problem I had so I can't offer any help with that.

However, I prefer midi because I don't have to remember to have the vsynth on and in midi mode before starting applications. The number of times I had to exit an application and start it up again was getting pretty annoying. So now I leave the vsynth in storage mode and use midi cables instead. In fact I can switch keyboards with applications open and everyone is happy.

Cheers,

Well I had a weekend to play with MIDI. Had some friends over who run studios and basically work with MIDI on a day to day basis.

We huffed and we puffed but to the high heaven we could not get MIDI going on FL studio. Logic is fine its just that patch changes causes the synth to reset its patch information. I suspect that the Back/Patch select messages are not correct and upsets the V-Synth a bit. Will be fixing that soon as I will program Logic to send the appropriate message.

I am aquirring a MPU today and more MIDI cables as I have decided to run MIDI via MIDI instead of USB. Just makes more sense hoentsly as I want to use my computer as the Main sequencer and be able to run MIDI out to all 3 my synths and then have them receive on the propers channel. Therefore I can avoid the messy MIDI in out thru daisy nonsense and get a proper signal to each of my synths.

Anyway the Saga continues......

Well I figured out the MIDI on FL Studio. Even without my MPU my V-synth and JUNO is now functionning smoother than a babies bum. I figured I will do a small tutorial for the v-synth and FL Studio so that other dont have to suffer like me.
