V w/ ver2.0 vs jp8000

Post by esbium »

Has anyone had a chance to compare the V-synth with ver 2 software to the jp-8000 as far as supersaw goes?
Just curious!

I would say the new oscillators sound a little different than they do on the JP8000. I haven't had a chance to try recreating a JP8000 patch on the V-Synth yet. The feedback oscillator doesn't seem quite as good but it isn't a major difference. The Super Saw is harder to tell. The V-Synth has the advantage of using Super Saw on both oscillators which the JP8000 cannot do. The Cross Mod oscillator isn't really implemented the same on the JP8000 (it's not an osc.) so it is harder to tell.

At any rate they all sound good on the V-Synth and are welcome additions. I don't believe there is any way that a V-Synth would sound like a JP8000. They are just different synths and each has a unique sound. Each is capable of things the other can't do. I have several synths that emulate analogs and they all sound differnt.

Hello,

I agree with trrstrl that the V-Synth even with stated similarities sounds different from the JP8K. The Super Saw is quite a bit smoother than I've heard from other VA's,
works quite well when processed with the COSM modules, and implementing it on both oscillators was a big plus.
It may be that someone will eventually write a translator utility that would take an existing JP8K patch and convert
it to a V-Synth equivalent.
Even if the settings were duplicated, the V-Synth would no
doubt give the JP's patches a different flavor.

I find it interesting, after five years of people railing at the "VA" as something that will never have its own distinct sound quality because it's "just digital software," that it's now recognized that even our old VA friends like the JP-8000 now have their own distinctive quality that's difficult to emulate exactly. :)

I'm holding on to my soon-to-be-vintage JP8K, and keeping with v1.51 for the V-Synth.

You can take advantage of the v2.0 features while keeping compatibility with 1.51 sounds. A Roland tech at MusikMesse disclosed how, and member RobNet created and posted the details here:

On roland us they have a download of the 1.51 waves with ver 2.0 os.
Worked for me. I think it's the same as robnet's method, just zipped up already.

by the way, if anyones bored, I found you can use the v-synth screen as a tt pad in quick edit mode, and the normal tt pad at the same time, with both assigned to different things.
I have not found a use for this yet. :)

.. has anyone considered that we might be able to reverse-engineer the way the ROM waves are defined, and make our *own* base set of waves to reside in the V-synth?

I took a very cursory look at the wave ROM file -- didn't sound recognizable in Sound Forge, so I expect it's compressed, encrypted or both. But it would be cool, if you have a set of your own favourite waves, to put them in as your own personal library using the v1.5-2.0 upgrade method.

Greg,

Thanks, that's cool -- and yes Roland have this conveniently available on their download page now.

That being said, I don't feel a need to go to OS 2.0 at all yet. It's a nice little extra I might use some day, when I've totally exhausted what I enjoy doing with v1.51 (when will that be? a long time from now! ).

I wouldn't mind a variant of OS2.0 as maybe part of a "classic synths" VC card for the VS, though, or, alternatively, as a "Loop Machine" VC card. :)
