newbie here...want to know if this is poss...

Post by angielackner »

hey all...

glad to stumble on this forum. i am currently the lead keyboardist at our church (keys are not my main instrument though - i'm a classically trained oboist, and play numerous other woodwinds...but keys were needed on our worship team so here i am...lol), and we have a v-synth GT. i am soooooooo not technologically inclined (while trying to figure out why the v.2.0 wasnt downloading on to the synth last night, my hubby ever so nicely pointed out that the usb cable i was using didnt go to the computer, instead i had the synth hooked up to his flight simulator joysticks *headdesk*

so anyways...any advice in "plain english" is always uber-helpful and appreciated...but i will try to muddle through technical jargon best i can...and sorry if i sound like a hick on here, i'm just used to playing instruments that dont plug in.

anyways...we recently had a great worship artist come and play at our church, and he was using a motif es rack with his keyboard...and i started wondering if i can hook up the vsynth gt to our yamaha keyboard and use it the way the guy was using the motif rack. it would save us money if we could, as i would love to be able to have what i play on the yamaha electric piano activate a pad that plays in tune on the vsynth so i can use both hands on the yamaha...if that makes sense.

thanx a bunch for any advice you all can give...and thank you for not laughing TOO HARD at my lack of info on this wonderful machine. :) i just want to learn to use it the best i can.

Angie, not sure if you can do this or not since you didn't disclose the model of your Yamaha keyboard. If that Yamaha has a 5-pin MIDI connection on the back (you may have 3 such connections labeled "in" "out" and "thru") then, yes, you can make the sound come from the Yamaha by playing the V-Synth.

You would have to connect the two keyboards via a MIDI cable. On the V-Synth, connect it to MIDI out. On the Yamaha, connect it to the MIDI in. That should be all you have to do to get the Yamaha to play. You will have to select the sound patch on the Yamaha.

thank you...i believe our yamaha is the CP-300. and i know the motif ES can be hooked up to it, so i am assuming that would mean that it is midi capable enough for the GT...i'll have to see if our worship pastor has a midi cable.

thanx

Hi Angie,
The CP300 is a fine piano and keyboard allright.
It has MIDI IN, OUT nas Thru connectors, and in order to control your V-Synth GT, is just a matter of connecting a standard (5 Pin) MIDI cable from the CP300's MIDI OUT to the V-Synth's MIDI IN, and of course you also have to configure them accordingly in order to have the same MIDI Device ID and to have the CP300 to MIDI out messages on the MIDI channel 1 (I believe that's default).

Read on through CP300 Owners Manual, specially chapters beginning on Pages: 51, 63, 88, 90

with regard to putting version 2 on the your GT you will need windows xp or vista (i am trying to find out if anyone know if you can do it with windows 7 64 bit) but in a nutshell you got to downloads form roland and download the version 2 software, its ziped so you will need to unzip it from the readmes that are contained and then load it onto a blank usb data key in the root (topmost directory or have no directory) you will need your computer to do this....the disconect any usb from vsynth and switch it off, plug in the data storage key now into the gt. and switch on 5 mins it will take to update the vsynth....hope this helps, make sure you read the readmes...and backup your ver one sounds to a librarian unlesss you dont mind them being overwritten. I think they will still be the ver one sounds available as factory presets but if you have made anything special do back it up or it will be gone for good
