Hey Jim. I've seen most of your V-Synth GT YouTube videos and I'm amazed of the kind of work and devotion you've put into this great synth. And although I don't own a GT, all these videos have made me thinking that maybe I owe myself to get one really.

Great stuff man, keep up the good work! :-)

Hi Jim

I want to buy a V-synth GT.
I'm an old school sampler owner (kurzweil k2000).
I read that the GT can use one sample and utilize only that sample to recreate a sound without using multisales(with spectral analisys).
Yes I know, multisample for acoustic instruments it's allways better but I can realize something good with one sample??
I remember a beautifull piano yamaha cp-70 that I multisampled from an e-mu vintage keys, very very Peter Gabrielish sound!
I now want to export the wav sample in the GT.
I'll try before one sample with variphrase and then (if I'm not convinced) export all the sample and recreate a multisample by zone.
I will send to you the results.... But now I first must buy a GT!!
Thank you
Roberto

I tried to reproduce a convincing acoustic piano patch on my GT. Just for fun, I don't need that since I own a Fantom G and made my own multisampled ac piano, but I wanted to see how Variphrase will perform with that.

I took a stereo sample at mid-velocity of the middle C, convert it to mono L+R and encoded it using the `solo' mode.

Of course, I used formant key-follow, along with filter cutoff key-follow and other parameters like volume, attack and release all indexed with different amounts of key-follow.

This was quite a failure since in the higher octave ranges, the sound was so much distorted that it even was not in tune anymore. Lower octaves weren't so good too, but not out of tune.

Switching Variphrase off in the PCM OSC page ended in better result.

Finally, I used Variphrase + zones to get an acceptable result.

Conclusion is: GT is a synthesizer, not a rompler but zones combined with Variphrase do a fair job.

And one word of caution : you won't get velocity layers per OSC (that is, playing different samples when you hit keys at different velocities). You may reproduce two layers with the two OSC, even 4 with two tones on the GT, but this is madness, it's not the GT's best usage you would make.

Well boys it has been fun.

I have an announcement.

I am now with a new company called Open Labs.

www.openlabs.com

It is an open platform music workstation.

It's very interesting stuff and I believe the future of things to come.

I will always love my top 3 Roland synths and they are the V-Synth GT, JP-8000 and D-50... but for the obvious reasons I will not be doing anymore V-Synth videos.

I'm sure Dan from Roland can answer any other questions you may have.

Dan is a very smart guy!

There are some great people on this forum and I wish you all the best in future.

Sincerely,

Jim Stout

What a truly, depressing day this is! Quick, I need some Cure Music played loudly! :)

Jim, best wishes with Open Labs. Our loss is their gain! And, it's a HUGE loss!

I want to thank you for your GT videos and for all the programming that you did.

I always enjoyed watching your NAMM demos, because 1) You always enjoyed your work and it showed 2) I learned the cool features of the new products you were demoing
3) I always learned something about synths.

My GT arrives tomorrow, so I guess I won't be depressed for very long!

TRAITOR! I am very upset!

I will feel much better, however, if you get me a free Neko! ;-)

Hey Jim Congratulations!!!

I really appreciate the help and tech info with all the gear, you always do an excellent job!

Hey Roland, how did you manage to let this guy slip away, get him back! A raise, promotion, new car whatever! Dan is definitely awesome but I think he has his hands full at the moment.

Also, when it comes to tech Jim is very hard to beat. You (Roland) have very few reps that can speak fluent geek, Bad move!!!

Well, I don’t know the situation Jim, not sure if you would come back even if they asked. And I’m sure openlabs will pay you more, after all, you know a lot about their competitor.

What ever the case is Jim, it would be cool if you drop by once in awhile.

All the best Zephyer.

Congrats Jim
I have been researching OpenLabs equipment since Korg announced the demise of the Oasys. Something that really pissed many of us owners off since all the hyped advertising about its openness and of the many upgrades that it would get.

Nonetheless, I'm glad to see that KARMA inventor, Stephen Kay, too, has ventured over to OpenLabs. Good luck to both of you. I really enjoy watching the OL live videos they post daily.

The big so called 3 have really woken a sleeping giant.
