MC 909 + SRX cards= V-synth

Post by tylawdaboss »

What do you guys think? I'm looking for something with a sequencer and great sounds. I know the specs on both but I I figured the MC 909 with the SRX cards would be a better option given the 909 has a sequencer. Also it seems that I can tweak sounds "just as" good as the V-synth. But overall I love what the V-syth is capable of. If you had to choose, what option would you go for?

You are so wrong I do not even know what to say ;-)

The MC-909 is a sample-based synth like Fantom-X. While it can do some great sample-based sounds, and process samples in many interesting ways through effects, it is miles away from what the V-Synth does.

The V-Synth, in contrast has a semi-modular synth architecture with virtual analog oscillators, VariPhrase sample manipulation and you can route an external sound right into the synth engine too. Next there are unique COSM processors with crazy algorithms like wave shaping and sideband filter, and a lots of modulation tools like the four-track step modulator.

I can't even describe how many things are possible with it, it's one of the most powerful synths made in the last 10 years.

Listen to these demos, 100% of these sounds come from the V-Synth.

Here, 90% sounds are from the V:

:-) I know what you mean. My reason for asking is because I am looking for an all-in-one. Sequencer, sampler, synth, etc.. I'm not sure the V-synth has one. I'm trying to get away from the "software" based setup. And If I go the V-synth route I will have to use my DAW. I'll have to do some more research.

I would then look at Juno-G, Fantom-Xa, or, the best choice - a Fantom-X6. You do need a keyboard if you want an all-in-one piece of gear, and on the X6 there are some great things not present on the 909 - notably, the step LFO modulator, more effects and 128-voice polyphony.

Your choice of buying a V-Synth or not shouldn't be predicated on its lack of a sequencer!

That's a bit like choosing which car to buy based on whether it comes with a radio or CD player!

At risk of upsetting all the Fantom owners (and I am one) - have you considered performing the sequencing (and audio recording) on your PC or Laptop?

I use my computer as the master sequencer to drive the Fantom X8.

Editing in Cakewalk (Sonar) is much easier than the Fantom X.

The reason I say this is because I'm trying to move away from the "software" based setup and go hardware. It seems right now having a good hardware sequencer like the MPC 1000 is a fair way for me to go. That coupled with the V-synth. Sounds like a combo. Endless sounds, great all-purpose sequencer.

From you initial suggestion of MC909+SRX, it seems you are not too bothered about having a keyboard.

So I say, if you want endless high quality sounds and a reall good sequencer all in one box:

MV-8800

It's not just for Hip-hop!
