JP8000>V synth GT format

Post by Vee Sinf »

Hi guys

New in here, just bought myself a V synth GT,absolutely awesome editing abilities on this board,Not so enthralled with many of the presets though, but I look beyond the surface as I'm a programmer and the V has some interesting editing options and I've already Become well aquainted with its O.S

Now with the VA side of things,I have managed to replicate many of my JP8000 Patches and converted them into GT format, but this is very time consuming and I don't have a lot of time at the moment to convert them all

The reason is I plan to include my V synth GT with my live setup, and because of the VA engine and how it mimics, many of the JP patches almost true to form means I won't have to carry my JP8000 along to the gigs as well

Is there any utility or software which allows the JP8000 type patches to be converted into V synth format???or am I going to have to spend many labourous hours editing to convert them

I haven't ever heard of such software, and given the difference in the frequency response of the oscillators and filters I do not think it would make much sense.

Many of the sounds I have replicated have translated well,I Copied many of the parameters over(Where applicable on the GT) using the "Scope edit function on the JP to copy the values over there is a difference in filter frequency response so the editing values are not exact, but with a little common sense applied and Listening accuracy in tweaking the filters it can be done,As I'm new to the GT I 'm not sure what all the differentiations in the Menus of the GT are in comparison to the JPs parameters as there is more options in the GT

so many of the sounds I have replicated are using the basic Osc/Filt/Amp settings and then fine tuning the submenus in the GT to get nearer the sounds, the Values don't translate the same but its feasible

but I can't see why it wouldn't be feasible to have some sort of conversion software to at least give you more of a headstart or be able to have a framework of the actual sound,by getting near to the values, based on the JP System exclusive or Patch dumps??working on the basic subtractive synthesis blocks, the Structure of the 2 synths is still the same, even if the GT has more intricate details for tweaking and a slight discrepancy in frequencies.I don't mind fine tuning, its just a little time consuming doing everything from scratch manually,I've got some mere 170 Patches I made on the JP I'd like to convert.

Thanks for the response,I was looking for some short term fix so I could take the GT out to gigs with most of the my JP patches without having to take the JP along as well,Guess Its going to be a task of copying the Patches over one at a time

for the time Being I shall have to carry on taking the JP out with me,until I've transfered the settings over to the GT

Thanks again.

I have done this with a few patches (vengeance presets). Some of them are very difficult to replicate, the supersaw is duller sounding and has a cleaner waveform... I had to add a bit of noise into the attack with the second oscillator. This made it impossible to then have a true second oscillator for those OSC balanced type patches.

In addition it took careful tweaking of the filter and the EQ to get the sound 'just right' and even then it would lose something when sweeping the filter.

I'm wondering how you could get the patches closely matched? Unless they are very simple, or not a perfect match?

I could see a converter working for a very basic framework, but I would think just doing it by hand and then using the architecture of the V-Synth you get better and more interesting sound, while learning a lot about it's capabilities. I wouldn't like to have to use it as a replacement for the JP8k!

cheers

Vee Sinf,

Would you consider sharing some of those patches with us?

On the general subject of JP vs V-Synth, I would imagine many of your V-Synth sounds utilising the super-saw could never sound as good as they do on the JP.

I've tried and tried but theres something about the detuning system of the V's SS oscilator... On the JPs you could find a number of sweet spots where the detuning was thick enough to sound lush but not so much that it sounds unpleasently detuned. On the V-Synth, there is no such position. It either sounds too thin with an LPF fully open or too detuned when you try and balance it out.

Using 2 (or more on the GT!) oscilators and detuning them helps but then you have lower polyphony and the oscs can often having phasing problems, adding a strange metallic quality to the attack.

Anyone else noticed this?
