I've seen the fact's but i still need some answers on the 90

Post by alexleies »

one huge question i have is does the 808 have a pitch and time manipulation like the 909 does if it does but not like the 909 how does it work, and basically i want to use this machine for live use, and the beat provider, i have a SP-808ex but i want something to mainly deal with the beats because you can only run 4 samples, also how like can the sequence be? because I'll be making music very random and not usual 1-2-3-4, any help and info will be great
thanks

(Edit) where is the 808 limited if not connected to a computer?

The Roland MC-808 is Roland's latest Groovebox, announced at the Winter NAMM in 2006. It is the successor to the late Roland MC-303, Roland MC-307, Roland MC-505 and Roland MC-909. Though cheaper than the Roland MC-909, it has a number of features the Roland MC-909 lacked including double the polyphony (128-voice) and motorized faders. It lacks velocity sensitive pads, SRX card expandability, and turntable emulation, which the Roland MC-909 has. It supports more flash memory (1GB CompactFlash,) and more RAM (up to 512MB,) than did the Roland MC-909. Its has a 2 line segment built-in LCD display that is less flexible - similar to the late Roland MC-505, and much smaller than the Roland MC-909 large LCD screen. It also has a large LED display, similar to the late Roland MC-303. The Roland MC-808 requires a USB connection* to a computer, for full patch editing, unlike the Roland MC-909.
(Note OS v1.03 update available on the Roland website allows for some additional patch editing without a computer, most notably sample chopping, including auto-chop.)*

I know them both and I now have the 909.
While I actually think that the best groovebox Roland ever did was the 505, there still is NO comparison between the 909 and the 808, the 808 being the loser.

In fact, the 303 became the 505, the 505 became the 909, but the other, less user-friendly line from Roland was the D-2, which became the 307, then the 808. These three don't allow almost any sound tweaking at all from the front panel unless you intend to do it in very awkward ways.
Sound quality and pattern types remain more or less the same across the whole range.
The 808 has 128 voices polyphony, ok, but do you really need those in a pattern-oriented machine?
Flying faders are absolutely overkill, too, in such a machine.
Superior sampling capability in the 808 is questionable, given that samples load in a year-and-a-half-per-megabyte rate. Also, there are superior dedicated samplers from Roland which cost a fraction of the price of the 808.
In short, it's very strange they don't make the 909 anymore (but I guess the groove trend has waned by now), but they could have AVOIDED at all making the 808.

that´s why I use both ..the 505 &909 together...luv em!!!

yeah that sorta made wonder why they did´nt build the good boxes on further...I guess that keeps the price up for the used ones. Look at the tr-909...still cost here in Germany around 1000-1200€...like they were brand new...or the tb-303 or or or ....just costing a little fortune...let´s all invest in MCs =)

but the MC909 has bugs, lots of them, meine freund.
I just found out.
Also, the 505 was more on the money in the sequencer: easier, cleaner, and the 8 tracks with 8 rhythm suibtracks was a FANTASTIC idea, wished they kept it instead of 16 tracks that are too many, with the drumset all over the place.
Sometimes, less is more.

Flying faders are excellent for live sound tweaking... all parameters are recalled.... so there is no stepping... like from 0 to 100 all of a sudden....

i recently traded in gear i wasnt useing to my local music shop for a brand new mc-808 it was the only groovebox they had anyway turns out from reading it seems like the mc-909 would suit me better seen as all i want to make is minimal techno. so on the off chance that someone could somehow be in the oppisite boat to me and only wants to make hiphop and rnb and they have an old mc-909 i will swop them a brand new mc-808 boxed and manual for it.

If someone have got a MC-909 then keep this beast, and if you want a MC gear then buy a second hand MC-909.

The MC-808 didn't impress me and also the internal sounds are something like weak and old sounding. Mainly the classic instruments (e.g. piano) aren't really usable and the synths are just acceptable but not more.

I don't know what kind of Sounddesiger have done these sounds but they didn't put much effort to this.

But maybe there is hope that soon a new MC is on the way, then the MC-808 isn't on the Roland page anymore but listed as a legacy product.

I´m so glad I got me the 909..it has the SRX-08 card planted inside so the sounds are really neat, then I got the 505 as a slave and also the EMX (yes I know it aint a Roland) =D together with the 909 with midi triggering so I can use the sounds of the EMX also with the 909...all in all The MC-909 is a real great workstation
