John Carpenter:
"I guess I will be holding out for a sp-666."

I strongly doubt Roland will release a unit called 666 ;)

I have a friend that is a professional w/ a one man show.

he currently runs his show with a sp303.

I think I will buy him one of these because it has some really wonderful featurs, especially for solo performance

I think it is a good product as long as it does not cost too much.

I think $499us would be about right

This friend of yours; is he Kieran Hebden of Four Tet? ;) I remember reading an interview with him where he stated he primarily used an sp-303 for his live acts...

sounds good for live: sp-404 with 1gb and sp-555 with 2gb...3gb of sampling....i need this for a live, is portable and fun with all the fx in both machines.

actually i use for live: mc-909, sp-404 and mv-8000....
but in some performance i need something more portable...

i prefer use my mv-8000 in the studio for production....im so happy with this machine...anyway.....

my future upgrade for live is:
1 - buy one mc-808 (1gb).
2 - buy one sp-555 (2gb).
together with my sp-404 (1gb).

I thought that the USB audio feature was cool (being able to sample right into the machine from whatever software you're using), and I hope Roland decide to port that idea over to the MV-8800, as I'd quite like to be able to do that!!!! The "Loop Capture" feature is also cool and would be a great addition to the MV-8800 as well, for building quick loops and ideas as well as for live work. How about it Mike? Any plans for an MV update?

Doug Crazy...the Simon Cowell of Roland Products..LOL!!!! That really gave me a laugh!

lol..yeah that made me laff also... I guess in a nice way he was telling me to STFU...lol

I wonder will a user be able to drg sounds onto the pads of the sp555 from a computer. That would be kinda cool.

Yes you can resample patterns by simply using the Loop Capture function. After the Loop Capture records it , you can send it back to one of the pads now as an audio phrase sample.

Doug Crazy , i was just messin with ya man , your entittled to your opinions.

And YES Doug , via software editor you can drag samples from your computer onto the pads and arrage your drum kits anyway you like , then save and shoot it over via USB. Done ! Mac or PC

Topic: .. A rant about Roland ..

and here's why:

since almost 9 years the Putte&Edgar band, one of the best bands in the world ( ), does its thingie.
equipped with 2 Roland SP-808's groovesamplers that are filled with homemade samples, one voice transformer and one drum-set Edgar and me do the show.

all we need from these samplers is pads that blink when they're playing, many banks for the samples and of course storage. (in this case: zip-disks allowing for 100mb.)

the SP-808's offer us all this, and for many years we've been very very happy with our set-up. but now, after the years, our machines aren't really trusty anymore as they got old. (we have 6 meanwhile, as we bought from ebay again and again.)

so, what would one expect? well, just wait for Roland to bring out successors. and yes, they did! they brought the SP-606. the SP-505, the SP-404, and since this summer NAMM they brought the SP-555.

so one could think "oki putte, what's there to complain then?!". and here it goes:

the SP-606 doesn't feature blinking pads when they're running, so it's a no-go for us. same applies to the SP-404. the SP-505 doesn't make use of these 16 pads, so its a no-go as well. and now this new SP-555 .. ..
they brought back the blinking pads, but now you only have 10 banks. yes, you can make use of 2GB-flashcards, and it even reads the samples directly from them. but: only 10 banks, and as the machine doesnt have a real display you cant name the banks to be organized. WAHHHH!

to me, its like as if these Roland people want to bug us, again and again, year after year.

Akai's MPC doesnt feature blinking pads either, and also share this silly bank-organisation, so this isnt an alternative for us. it's just frustrating to know that THE machine we need was built once, but never found any successor.

rant over

**"Well as I see from everyone posting there view on this machine, thats not in the stores yet, all I see everyone complaining and some loving this new machine concept: the Roland SP-555...people this machine is made toward DJ's as another tool to add into your performance! Notice I said "Performance".... Let's not knock it till we try it first?

I have my Roland MC-909 for about close to 1 year from Aug 24, 2006 - and I love my Roland MC-909. When this was first anounced back in October 08, 2002... it was supposed to be the successor to the Roland MC-505. Well I have the Roland MC-303 & Roland MC-505 and I love all three machines because each have there own personality and each does something differently. And really I found that each machine is not a successor to each other, cause each has something that Roland Corp. has taken out to upgraded onto to new technology or idea's??? The Roland MC-808 was announced in Jan/2006. I tested it live - after it was released into the stores, that's 2 months later when it was already in the stores. I read and done my Research over and over - before I even started to think about buying The Roland MC-808, since it came out last year in Jan/2006 the Roland MC-808 did not sell me right away,....

I could have bought it in cash at Guitar Center at the same time I saw the Roland MC-909 there before they discontinued it out of the stores... Even the Salesman told me not to buy the Roland MC-808 or the Roland MC-909, that for me to get the Akia MPC-4000 or the new Akia MPC-2500?? I asked him why??, but he could not give me a good answer. He just Ranted about how: The Akai Professional MPC-2500 Music Production Center combines a 64-track MIDI sequencer with a 32-voice 16-bit stereo digital sampler. and "the MC-808 is a toy and the MC-909 is to big??" I was like with a poker face - thats not a answer???

I told him: I own the Roland MC-303 first, and yea it did not have a sampler - but for me to compensate for that I went and got a 'Roland DJ-70mkII which had a scratch wheel pad built-in' also used with it a Roland MC-50mkII which was a stand alone midi sequencer. Plus using this with my two Technic SL1200-MK2 turntables. Then later on I got the Roland MC-505 with a portable Roland MS-1 Digital Sampler which was the first portable Sampler made by Roland in 1996 until they later on came out with the Roland SP-202, SP-303, SP-404 and so on into the future. And I never bothered using PC with MAC or Windows for live performances or software. And I'm a Computer Engineer. I'm a hardcore Hardware user. The best thing I found using my Roland MC-909 was it replaced all Four of my Machines in one shot, to carry around with my TURNTABLES...But i did not get rid of them i still use my older gear as a add on with my Roland MC-909.. My turn away from the Roland MC-808 was not that I did not like it, It's just it did not have a Big Display like the Roland MC-909. And I had no problem carrying around a big Machine like the Roland MC-909. The Roland MC-808 has its good use pro and cons....but that goes on with every other gear.

As far as some people say you can't Multi-Sample with the MC-909 across the 16 pad....there DEAD wrong?? Cause I was taught by my Friend in NYC who has the Roland MC-909 for past 3 years and showed me how to use my MATRIX's control to play with my samples sounds....all I have to do is convert my samples into a patch first....

Read first Pg: 51 - FROM ROLAND MC-909 Manual:
"Patch/Sample Mode" - then -->

FROM ROLAND MC-909 Manual: Pg: 68
[MATRIX CTRL: This selects the parameters to be controlled by Matrix Control Source 1–4 and the Sens settings, as well as the specific Tones whose parameters you wish to control. Up to four destination parameters can be selected for each controller and controlled simultaneously.]

and then later on play with my RPS setting - which is now fixed using the update from JAPAN OS v1.23.....the point here people - have more patients with your machine. Learn as much as you can with your machine. And if the Roland MC-808 or Roland SP-555 is not what your looking for making music in other fashion....Then Go get a Roland MV-8000 or Roland MV-8800 or if you like Computer's then get PRO TOOLS....but just remember this --->

"Its not the machine that makes the music for you or your Remixes. Its the Human Behind the machine that makes you a POWER USER !"**
