Yeah ive been busy traveling and usually do postings over at MVNation.com for our MV-8000 users. I had no clue that Fantomized had forums for MC-909, SP-606 , SP-404 , the new MC-808 , Juno-G & SH-201. I seriously thought it was only Fantom X discussions here , but you guys have all the other stuff that i specialize in. This is great ! I will definatly start to direct alot more people this way for all the SP & MC products.

I usually dont like to post anywhere for fear of fanatics trying to flame me for something that doesnt work in their system or why a product doesnt do a certain thing. Ive never had a problem over at MVNation i get lots of repect and mad love from those guys even if there having a problem. I hope its the same here. Bottom line though , no product on the face of this planet is perfect , theres always gonna be something that could of or should have been added or should not be there etc etc etc.

Either way im very glad to be here , i think you guys are doing a great job from what ive read so far. Im here to assist in any way i can and have some fun and learn new things about gear , ya know somebody always comes up with new ways of working a machine.

thanks for your post.

Let me clear out some things for you:

First, we exist since 2003 (this forum turns 3 years in April) and all in all we're a very peaceful community, one of the most friendly places on the web. Bashing or flaming is really rare here and our moderators are really great gentlemen who'll always put it right. So do not worry, it's quiet here

Next, about the supported gear. Indeed we were Fantom-oriented (hence our name), but later I realised that there is just too much interesting gear from Roland which is also not supported at any other forum. So it was really like "why not?" you know. Juno-G is a direct Fantom-X little brother, as is the MC-808. SP-404 just looks and sounds too cool not to talk about it... Then go the VP-550 and SH-201 - V-Synth and XT's descendants which I've added to the V-Tribe.

In whole we have almost 4000 members, many are interested in Roland gear beyond what we used to discuss here so now we're even planning to join Fantomized and V-Tribe together to form a larger community (after all we have V-Synth discussions here and Fantom discussions at V-Tribe - now it makes no sense to have two forums).

Well, after a week spent playng with the 909, i guess iìm starting to understand this machine better, but i still have some problems in live performance (i'm thinking it will be more difficult to use a 909 in live shows than the 505). I'm tring to use the rps function to merge different patterns but it don't works very well like the megamix in the 505 (to me the best function for live shows).
Anyway i tried to import the old patterns i did with reason (long time ago, before discovering machines...) but i'm having lots of problems: empty midi, patterns that are completely different from the original etc... I have to admit that i'm very poor in the midi knowledge, so i ask if someone had the same problem or if some of you have some links to clear my problems with this issue. Anyway i have the impression that i've just scratched the surface of this machine since every time i work on it (with my good manual aside) i discover a new function or a new way to use the patterns.

This is strange to me....... I wonder how deep into the synth do you want to go, that you need a computer to get there on the 909.. That thing, I think, was borderline genius........ All the knobs and switches you need to tweak the synth, right there on top.. for all four synth parts. Then you have the tone select buttons, right there.

The only thing I would've changed about the 909, is I would have put the keys in two rows, instead of one that spans the width of the machine.... And I would have some kind of management function, where I can group an unlimited number of patterns......

Of Course.... like on all the XVs, I'd have more insert effects...

I agree with you about the total control that you can gain on the sound (i say 'you can' because right now i feel i'm far away from mastering all features for the control of the sound); the reason that push me in looking a way to import the patterns from reason is that before using machines i've worked for 3 years only with pc (expecially with reason2.5) and i've made some nice patterns (many of them are tied each other in order to produce a tune that is more than the sum of all tones....) that i'd like to use again for live shows...it seems to me such a waste of good ideas that can improved more by performing them in a 909. The problem is not editing of the sound, but the composition of the pattern....i find myself more confortable in composing with the pc; but probably is just a matter of getting used. I agree with you also about the keypads: having a double row instead of a single one would make using the keyboards more confortable. My hope is that in the future the prices for these machines drops ( i had to sell a portion of liver to buy the 909) so i might start thinking to try a 808 even if here in Italy there's no way to buy one, as well as all optional items related to the groovebox line....
Anyway i'd like to propose this thing: since here in the forum we are all composers and/or producers why don't we post some patterns to be used and modified from all the forum's community in order to create a song with everybody's personal touch? something like GNU license song.We could post the midi files as a start..... Waiting for your feedback guys!

I don't flame people who are in a position to help. And really, RolandUS employees are 2 or 3 degrees removed from the problems like OS bugs, so it's a miracle I've gotten as much help from them over the years as I have.
But, if you could, it would be way cool if you could forward the MC909 OS petition to the Japanese Cheese...some of the problems aren't big deals, but 2 or 3 of them are REALLY big problems esp if you want to use the device live. I'd be happy if they came out with an EX version, ala the SP808 ->SP808EX.

Ehh, that wasn't really the reply I was hoping for, but at least it was 6 characters more than I've gotten from the other reps and Roland employees I've contacted over the past few months.

So, are you saying all these problems have been ironed out in the 808? It's kinda irrelevant though, the interfaces of the two products are very different
for me and many others who bought the 909, which I'll add wasn't exactly cheap when it came out. I'll take a big loss if I have to sell it and throw down 1k on an 808. Sorry Mike, I know it's not your fault, but Roland seem to be burning alot of loyal customers, and they're going to pay a price if they don't do SOMETHING about it. That's all from me on this, I understand if you can't really say or do anything about it.

Let me start off by stating that the sound quality of the 909 and the fantom x are not even comparable. I think we all came to that conclusion.

In any event, I purchased the 909 a month after it was released. I had it for 3 days and took the unit back. I was very un-happy with the sound quality. The production store that I purchased it from showed me demos and played around with the sounds. It sounded pretty good. I got it home and hooked it up to some real studio monitors and these ears heard the true sound quality. It appears the speakers in the production store colored the sound more then expected.

In any event I ended up purchasing the EMU MP-7 over the 909. This unit is not made any longer but the quality was better. The EMU unit sound was like 128 Poly. Blending some sample from this unit with my Fantom X creates a nice sparkle on my production. In conclusion, I think the 909 is a nice unit. However, the sound quality was the master turn off.
Yes, I could have added some effects to bring up the sparkle and punch of the sounds, however when you constantly have production work coming at you, you want to spend more time perfecting the master results and less time finding a effect that sounds good for each patch.

I'd say %95 of the presets on the MC909 suck it. Once I get around in there and roll my own though, I'm pretty happy with the sounds (for a rompler). And I have good monitors (EVENT TR8's). The XV engine sounds a bit punchier on the envelopes than my JV1080. The Emu command stations are good units though, more/better filters to choose from and better presets (depending on your style). You made a good choice IMO.

1st off,
I am loving this site and i LOVE my 909!
I also have/use MPC3000,MP-7 and RM1X pieces.
All these pieces of gear sound totally differant from eachother. If i had to pick 1 piece though to do it all it would be the 909 hands down!

I got a 909 too, among other gear (MS2000br - Mk6 Mo'Phatt and TritonLe) and it get's the most use right now. I recently ordered an MPC4000 (although akai hasn't shipped them yet) I can't wait to see what kind of crazy combination they'll make along with the other gear. I don't think I'll ever get rid of the ol'9ski, now matter how much new gear I get...by it being so easy to drop a beat or a remix with it!
