MC-909 Omni Off as sound module

Post by SMUDGE »

I've tried switching the Omni mode on the MC with CC#124 from a MPC and from an Axiom keyboard with negative results. When slaved to the MPC, the MC still plays all the MPC's unmuted tracks on whatever MC track is selected, instead of track 1 for 1, track 2 for 2, etc. I can easily use a Korg M3M as a 16 track sound module for the MPC, but I am unable to use the MC as a 16 track sound module.

I am using the first MC-909 OS and have never updated. The manual says the MC receives Omni off and on CC.
Does anyone have experience using the MC as a 16 track sound module?

I would suggest updating to the newest OS, never a bad idea. Take a look at your global MIDI/Seq settings in the System menu, specifically the Tx/Rx settings. Pretty sure omni mode is called 'Remote Keyboard Switch' on the MC, and you can turn it on/off here. You can also turn it on and off from the Arpeggio and Chord Memory menus.

Thanks,
I am using the original OS..
Remote Keyboard switch allows me to use a MIDI keyboard as the controller, which also means I was able to send CC#124 as the 909 manual says it allows Omni on/off CC. It didn't work though. I wonder if there is an Omni bug in the original OS? I am hesitant to upgrade if in the upgraded OS editing in the sequencer is still going to wipe out any patch settings I make prior to saving.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood you; what exactly are you trying to achieve? Just to be able to switch Omni mode on/off from an external controller or sequencer?

When 'Remote Keyboard Switch' is set to 'On', the MC basically routes any incoming MIDI (from a keyboard/controller or sequencer) to the currently selected part on the MC, regardless of any channel settings from the transmitting controller/machine. Pretty sure that's basically what 'Omni Mode' is?

If you're slaving the MC to the MPC and want the MIDI channels to correspond to the MCs parts (1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc), you'd want to turn the remote keyboard switch off, and make sure all the proper MIDI settings are set in the system menu to receive MIDI from the MPC. MIDI channels are hardwired on the 909, meaning Part 1 is channel 1, Part 2 is channel 2, etc... and there's no way to change that.

I meant to reply to this earlier, Bonerton.
I had tried turning the Remote Keyboard switch off previously, but I had already transmitted Omni on or off (don't recall) and it didn't work. I tried it again without transmitting CC and it works like a charm. Thanks!
